Not aware of any classic references because I don't start med school until this fall.
If you don't like your textbook though, I'd check out Kahn Academy and see if you like their neuron videos. A quick search shows they go from structure into some more specific and complicated stuff.
I used their site to explain some orgo stuff when I was prepping for the MCAT and it really helped, but I haven't used the neuron videos. I'm a fairly visual learner, so those videos really fit into my learning style. IMO, in order to really understand this kind of stuff you need to be able to draw and diagram a neuron, so having someone draw it for your while explaining may help.
