what a great scam it would be if someone became an expert and then got on pawnstars to feed him really high price estimates when your buddies came to sell stuff

i mean ya i realize all "reality" shows are varying levels of fake but afaik pawn stars is legitimately 100% fake like none of the items are owned by the people who bring them in, none of the transactions actually happen, etc.

My favorite parts of shows like that is where the main guys "state" how much they'll get for the items and it rings up on the screen along with the cha-ching, chaching of a cash register, then a quick "cost" line which was always agreed to in 3 to 5 counteroffers and a handshake, then more cha-ching cha-ching and the "profit" figure. Just like that; always negotiate a price on crap you're buying and then always assume you'll get your asking price when selling.

The worst is on American Pickers when the guy they're buying from's initial offer is too low and they negotiate against themselves to raise the price. Lo ****ing l at that ever happening in real life

The worst was that American Pickers show where they'd buy a pile of crap from a yard sale or some crazy guy's basement and then be like "oh we paid $10 and we estimate we can sell it for $350, so $340 profit!!" Of course they never actually showed them selling any of that junk.

that's one of the better links i think.

cliffs: 1. they use one employee of a specialty guitar shop to bring in a vintage guitar and then call up another employee from the same shop as their expert. said guitar obviously still for sale at that same guitar shop even after rick supposedly bought it. 2. they "refurbish" a vintage coke machine but the "after" pics are of a totally different model of machine.

Yeah, I mean why not go the extra mile and fake-sell it, too?

They hardly ever do this though. I mean, I don't even know if that profession exists in real life, but if it does, it's definitely all about ripping off old people for as much as you can get away with. Yet, it seems like 95% percent of the stuff they end up buying, they end up paying something like 50-75% of their appraised value. There's just no way a real business could support all their costs paying that little markup, how quickly can a bunch of rusty signs fly off the shelves?
