Really? Draw something is pretty fun and the Idea is somewhat original (afaik). Whats app is just a messaging service right? Doesn't seem unique and seems replaceable. Don't know a whole lot about whatsApp though.

Sounds like the value is more in the cross platform functionality.

Yahoo paying a 17 year old in Britain $30 mil last week for an app that makes scrolling easier seems like a bargain now.

A theory behind that app is that it it was only being used as a test-case in its current form and the actual value was in the search indexing and yahoo may develop it into some type of specialized (content) search engine.

I mean, WhatsApp technology is significantly more valuable, especially if its proprietary.

Makes plenty of sense for Google

CDL is apparently the smartest person I've encountered who:

1. Willingly defrauds himself out of an education.
2. Wont take free money when the opportunity presents itself.

I guess ethics come and go.

Well, it handles messaging cross-platform without having to pay SMS and it's the leading cross-platform messaging service. Google is basically shopping for messaging software for the next line of Androids. $1 billion is a lot of money, but it's not a shocking amount when you consider how many Androids sold in 2012 and how important cross platform messaging is for Droid users.

I think WhatsApp is used more outside of the US.

Yeah, to clarify, I don't have any opinions on the deal in a strict business sense from Google's POV. It's just a sense of awe at how "easily"/quickly huge sums of wealth can be created in this particular market, as in excerpt, which never fails to stun me (especially the "13 employees" part.) Smartphones are amazing.

Yeah his post made no sense at all. He might as well have posted "someone actually bought and paid for a car yesterday. Literally four wheels, an engine, a braking system, and headlights. So pointless." Uh ok br0.

Yeah, being compared a lot to Instagram deal, which I thought Facebook overvalued.

I think WhatsApp deal would be a bigger win for Google than Instagram for Facebook.

I'm usually perplexed at how Facebook continues to approach things from a business POV however. They've made a good many poor decisions with very few acquisitions or investments that have paid off big. Google OTOH has an aggressive risk-taking approach that pays off as often as it crashes and burns

I'm a couple pages behind and grunching...so maybe it's been discussed in the last couple page but does anyone need to be punched in the face harder than Bill Rancic?

Instagram purchase was more about neutralizing a potential competitor more than it was proprietary advancement though

Agree. This is where I think Facebook faces a ton of trouble. They will have to invest more billions neutralizing the field. Facebook business model is just built to fail eventually.

I don't think the Apple/Twitter purchase will happen, but something of that significance will happen in the next 5-10 years and will be pretty damaging to FB's market share

the only frustrating thing about instagram is that it gives these faux artist ****s the unmediated license to take a picture of every meal or place they travel to during the day, put a filter on it, and constantly plaster your facebook wall in a slew of over-sharing.

Over sharing has become an epidemic. I know a guy that checks in every place he goes to on four square, reposts random pics on the internet, tweets out generic sayings he likely procured elsewhere, retweets various things, and takes a pic of every drink/meal he has and labels it with the hashtag #pouritup or #foodporn. I mean, really?

i don't really pay attention to fb news feeds but ya, pretty much the worst thing about instragram is it inspiring a bunch of halfwits to think they're brilliant photo-artists. i get that's the whole appeal to instagram with its pretty filters! and what not, and in theory it's pretty cool, but in the hands of the wrong people the execution is a disaster
