Re: SE FAQ, Liveblog & Reading is FUNdamental

People who root for a college team despite having never attended that school are beta slunk artists. Discuss.

So, no one under 18 or so is allowed to root for college sports teams. Interesting.

I'm with you on both counts. I say France like most English speakers, but say Tour duh Frahnce, with the r somewhere in between a normal one and French. I'm all over the place on other countries and especially cities:
Pah-rah-gway
Ooh-rooh-gway
CHEE-leh
Pah-kee-stahn
In-dia (not een-dia as you might expect given the above)
Mah-dreed (in Spanish I'm about 50/50 Madrid and Madriz)
Neese (don't think anyone pronounces it like nice)
Bar-seh-LOH-nah (don't do the lisp in English, but pronounce the vowels like Spanish or Catalan)

I normally say Paris the usual English way, but with cycling races (Paris-Nice or Parix - Roubaix) or the football club Paris Saint-Germain I go Pah-ree, soft pronouncing the R.

I also to pronounce Canadian cities like Canadian anglophones do:
Vang-couver, BC (but Van-couver, WA)
Muhn-treal
Ottahwah

I can't defend my inconsistency.

So a kid born in a college town like Columbus or Ann arbor and lives there his whole life rooting for the home team decides to go elsewhere for college and all of a sudden he is jot a fan? Sounds like an awful theory. I don't even see the big deal if some forty year old man moves to Seattle and starts having some interest in UW. Seems standard

Also people who root for the Jets even though they've never played for the Jets are slunks.

I root for the Heat despite no connection to Miami because I like labron. My conscience is clear.

I wouldn't be so sure of that. Read the first sentence of the following link for the definition and tell me the Kentucky basketball team doesn't fir the definition.

Re: SE FAQ, Liveblog & Reading is FUNdamental

I just don't thin it even requires some special circumstance. If you grow up in Oklahoma you will be a sooner or cowboys fan. I feel like college is a perfectly legitimate reason to move up in fandom like if you get a scholarship to Duke obviously root for duke basketball. But if you decide to go to some little liberal arts college I don't see any reason why you would have to be ashamed of rooting for OU still.

The latter is correct if you are in the other countries. If you are in the US, you are indeed a tool for using the foreign pronunciations. It is actually just flat out wrong, unless you like calling China, Zhong Guo.

**** Cincinnati, feel 0 connection to that city. Indians/Colts/Cavs. mutigers is pretty much right, though. In Kentucky you're going to be a UK or UL fan, it transcends "college" (there are a bunch of UL fans that go to UK, as the obvious example.) Moved here at like 4, UK had their '96-'98 run like two years afterwards when I started being fully aware of sports, I was hooked.

Nobody should support that fat tub of lard Mike Brown. It is deeply disappointing that I continue to do it.
