ive tried reading GoT

i don't think books are stupid either, don't share Dean's opinion

however, GoT books are full of rambling and verbose nonsense

I don't mean this in a way that my opinion is super important, just that I have a natural bias for books>>anything already.

you should have just said this to begin with. there's a big difference between "i don't enjoy fiction" and "LOL READING"

I mean, there's a pretty lol assertion in Dean's post that you don't learn stuff reading novels.

I don't read novels. The only books I read are non-fiction books.

I don't really get the appeal of reading fiction.

most of us have spent more time reading Riverman and RAIDS posts in the last year than reading books

think about that

Different strokes I guess. I'm not gonna claim some kinda preening hipster superiority, but imo books are the best medium through which to better understand the human condition. I'd just say you're missing out.

Re: SE FAQ, Liveblog & Christ Baiting

and by the way this is EXACTLY what i'm talking about with SE

i say one thing that goes against common belief and everybody jumps all over me as if i'm a horrible person.

i am genuinely trying to understand why others enjoy novels. yet all you morons can do is tell me my stance is horrendous since it doesn't align with what is commonly believed by intelligent people, even though that belief was formulated aeons ago when the world was a different place.

i thought my implications were clear. i kinda assumed that most movies would be adapted from novels but i guess non-fiction applies too. i'm down to read biographies fwiw.

i have read a good handful of books that are directly about the human condition as opposed to indirectly descriptive of it. who's the moran now!

All Dean was saying in that post is that he has an ADDesque attention span and thus never got into reading.

I don't see why we were supposed to respond like he was beginning some existential debate about reading and contemporary society, technology + storytelling, etc.

people aren't going to change their minds about preferences like this. it would be a waste to attempt to convince you to read fiction and frankly i don't care what you do with your free time.

most of the time when people express dumb opinions (regarding "all reading is stupid" which is what i thought you meant) it's just easier to lol and move on.

Although it's weird coincidence because earlier today I read DFW's commencement speech to Kenyon (wherever the f that is) again after I had quoted part of it to someone. It's truly among the five or so best things I've ever read.

you really don't see why some people enjoy fiction? a talented author using creativity/imagination to illustrate a point can be interesting.

obv on the non-fiction train as well though

Whenever you read a good book, it’s like the author is right there, in the room talking to you, which is why I don’t like to read good books.

Books offer a level of immersion that is not achievable with other media. The satisfaction at a payoff so long in the making can be immense. You can also get a window in the minds of the characters that cannot be done any other way. In a movie or a TV show, one extrapolates the thoughts and feelings of the characters from their actions. In a book, one can see the thoughts firsthand. The artistry of using words to describe something is also appealing to many; sometimes an author can make a description so perfect or use such a clever metaphor that you know exactly what he's talking about.

If those things don't appeal to you, then that is fine. But it seemed like you really didn't know why it appeals to anybody, so I'm trying to explain it.
