Spoiler:
the danger is
deriving regressive, anti-humanistic beliefs (such as those implied by this evasive, non-"No." answer) from the literal aspects of his religion that obviously aren't true.

respect chim/f60/RT's take on the obnoxiousness of these discussions, though, so leaving it here, just felt the need to highlight this overlooked exchange. I still think the "atheists are more obnoxious" is an oddly angled criticism given that one is a critique of broad substance and one is a critique of specific individuals' tact and rhetoric, but it's a bright new AIDS-free day.
I just saw this now. My answer was not "evasive." it was purposeful. It was also written from my phone (as I am posting now) so brevity is the soul of my fingertips.

My moral beliefs are completely irrelevant when it comes to this area of public policy. It is none of my business who marries who. It shouldn't be government's either. The idea that heterosexual marriages are somehow cheapened by allowing gay marriage is obviously very silly.

It's none of my business if you want to play poker online either. How I feel morally about it doesn't matter (I bet you can guess how I feel about poker though). If no involuntary third party is detrimentally affected by the policy, then there should be no government intervention.

Watching Firefly again, River tears up the Bible and says "it's broken...it doesn't make sense".

Spot on!

I think the atheists are obnoxious/impertinent thing is peculiarly american. Seems that the general attitude over there is that while you don't necessarily have to be particularly religious yourself, you damn well better respect it in others because it's really important to them. Whereas here the vast majority are taught to lol religion/religious people from a young age. Same seems to be true in most other developed christian nations.

For example, I doubt this would occur with an american TV audience.

May is pretty great for sport, PL finishes, FA cup & CL finals.

idk about top 3, but wasn't thinking at all about the NBA playoffs, which is like the perfect event for that sports landscape. Immersive and self-contained, almost like the World Cup or something. (Next summer!) Been picking up interest in the NBA in general, but the NBA playoffs were awesome even when I wouldn't have called myself an "NBA fan"

These are all cool events. But, in general, give me a full month of matches over a final any day.

This is definitely true for where I live now (minneapolis) and im assuming most midwest places with unforgiving winters. As someone who grew up in california, its interesting to me, the mentality of people here. In general, im not a "seasons" person, but there is almost a tangible, community joy and appreciation for the spring/ summer after we all go through the winter together (which was worse than stepping into a black hole). Im not sure sure if its worth going through the winter, but now that it has, the upswong of spring/summer is even more enjoyable now.

Wow, wrong again.

NHL playoffs + NBA playoffs + baseball hitting its stride.

May and October are the best sports months imo.

February is by far the worst ainec. We had this discussion back at the beginning of February.

Karak,

I respect that you don't think the government should legislate morality. Curious though, which, if any, of these you would classify as immoral, and why:
- pre-marital heterosexual sex
- divorce and remarriage
- pre-marital homosexual sex
- marital homosexual sex
- homosexual marriage
Assume all to be between consenting adults.

Also curious if you think the Noah's ark story in Genesis is an account of an event that actually took place or an allegory. If the latter, what idea or concept is it meant to illustrate?

Why never Hinduism or Islam for white people in America? Seems sorta weird you think you arrived at Christianity independently.

Anyone have any experience being best man/throwing a bachelor party? I'm going to have to do both for the first [and likely only] time in my life sometime next year and am irrationally sort of terrified. Just alcohol and strippers and you can't go wrong, or what? Any tips for the speech? I feel like I'm making this much harder than it should be.
