The two endowments I have second hand knowledge of act primarily as a fund of funds (Duke and UPENN). This means they invest primarily in hedge funds (2-3 year lockups mostly and likely quarterly redemptions with 30-90 days notice after that with penalties for early redemptions) and private equity funds (typically 7-10 year commitments with no early redemptions). They also do some co-investments where they invest as a partner alongside a private equity or real estate fund (very illiquid as selling typically relinquishes the control premium and would often not even be allowed in the original contract). From what I know only the money on the margin is invested directly in the market and thus liquidity is low.

In theory, endowments have the longest timeframes of all investment vehicles and also the lowest need for liquidity and seek to achieve higher returns by sacrificing short term liquidity. Thus, it is highly unlikely than any endowment of meaningful size is very liquid. This is why so many of them, not just for universities, but also for charities, museums, private schools, etc. suffered so much in the recession. There was no ability to get out of the market and the liquidity premium also steepend which hurt their mark to market.

I interned at an endowment investment office my senior year and the majority of them are run like this with the exception of the lockup/redemption periods for the fund of funds portfolio. They typically tend to favor funds with 1yr or less locks and monthly liquidity.

Regarding the Amanda Knox thread, I think I had a pretty typical progression. At first I was impressed by Henry's megaposts and found them very persuasive, then I just marveled at his obvious mental illness / obsession with always getting the last word in vs. the astroturf guy.

The thread is obviously awful, but they are going to announce the verdict very soon (today?), so keeping an eye open for all the butthurt and potential bans that could come from it is the only reason anyone should care about that thread.

In my experience, any charity can have a hottie soliciting donations. In fact, most do, somewhere. I believe the industry term is "talent".

Sriracha is kind of a weird hot sauce. I love it on a variety of things, but I don't know how to classify it. I don't even think of it as a pure "hot sauce," I guess.

Anyway I mostly agree with CDL's list though I haven't had Crystal Hot Sauce. Cholula and Tabasco are pretty bad.

I think of sriracha like you. I dont like it on eggs, potatoes, chicken, rice, etc. but like it on a variety of asian dishes. I would eat Texas Pete on all kinds of stuff that I would never put Sriracha on though. Its definitely the GOAT hot sauce.
