My SE title brings all the posters to the yard, and they're like, "it's not worse than Madoff!"

okay, but part of ruining people's finances is that there's some suicide equity there. youre responsible for the predictable consequences of your actions, or something like that, and some chance of suicides was pretty predictable.

part of allowing someone else to manage your money is doing your due diligence on who you give it to and knowing there is a non-zero chance they blow it all up.

I hope Madoff sleeps easy at night knowing these suicide victims didn't perform their due diligence.

it doesnt make any of his actions even slightly more justifiable. everything you do with your money has some sort of risk. whether you hide it in a safe inside your home, turn it over to warren buffett, or give it to a nigerian prince who emailed you with promises of riches there is risk attached. youre never more than one policy decision away from losing almost all of your purchasing power and investments can always go down.

I still trust banks, but if they were to fail and the FDIC didnt live up to its promise to backstop them then it sucks, but that is the risk I take by not having to carry the cash on my person or leave it at home.

why should he be held accountable for a decision they made? presumably they made the decision because they lost money they needed to maintain their level of happiness. each person is accountable for their own happiness and should stop blaming others for their misery or troubles. sure he lost the money because it was all built on fraud, but that doesn't mean that the person who just had their finances ruined cannot have a very positive and upbeat view on life and live quite happily.

re: SE FAQ, Liveblog & Things CDL Says Thread

whats lol noze? I dont defend a single decision that either sandusky or madoff made that resulted in their demise and sentencing. I think all of these decisions are completely inexcusable and should never ever even cross the mind of people who are trusted to do the jobs they both did (or anyone for that matter). They made bad decisions, but everyone who was adversely affected can still find happiness if they work at it and get help from their friends, family, community, professionals in the mental health industry, and even the government where applicable.

Why is viewing this as a more complex problem an issue that society is unwilling to grasp? Is it simply becuase it takes too much energy to view each decision instead of grouping people into broad categories of good and bad?

I'd like to see CDL lose a large chunk of his net worth due to fraud, then try to control his own happiness.

iirc we got a little taste of this a couple of months ago when he was telling us about the guy rocking him in the face 2 or 3 times unprovoked.

well, I hope this never happens, but if it did it would not be anyone else's responsibility but mine to do everything I could to continue on with life and make the best of it. Maybe the best life I could have from that point on wouldn't ever be as good as it could have been, but you cant do better than the best and I know it would not bring me happiness to hate on the people that had a hand in any of my problems so I dont see why I would try.

I really do not understand the emotion of revenge or wanting to see others suffer even after committing awful acts. I never want people to suffer if it is at all avoidable (ie. non zero or negative sum).

So if you rape someone it's not your fault but if Bernie madoff steals your money it is your fault.

Got it.
