Re: SE FAQ, Liveblog & Tardiness

People always focus on the classwork aspect of ADHD/ADD because they're competitive side thinks they're getting screwed over (I had a kid in my ****ing law school class who got to take un-timed exams which is about the most absurd thing ever) but I know a couple of people with the diagnosis and it affects them outside of just not wanting to do papers. Like they'll be watching t.v. and someone tries to speak to them and they don't hear it until someone has said their name 10 times. Or they'll cook something and leave the oven on and the fridge open and no matter how many times you call them out they just can't help it.

I never had an issue with exams because each problem is short and different enough I never had an issue moving from one to the next.

A little late here, wrt the Dalai Lama /Einstein quote/misquote. I was sent that awhile ago and just assumed it was but the Dalai Lama because well, the quote was accompanied by a pic of him.

Either way, I love the quote and believe it is applicable to a large population today.

Yeah this is what I was referencing. ADHD is most certainly not a fraud but it is criminally over diagnosed.

no there are only two choices: every case is correctly diagnosed or none of them are. there is no such thing as middle ground on any issue.

I mean, you guys had to realize that I'm aware that there are legitimate cases.

But go to any suburban public school, the kids are totally locked into ADD as an excuse for everything.

Richard, I definitely agree with that. Nearly everything is over-diagnosed and over-sought-after by patients though.

Especially with white women. God damn white women love eating pills. I don't know what it is but if you need anything - prescription or non-prescription - just go to a white woman over 40's house.

Yeah, when you called the entire thing a "fraud" we had to realize you knew there were legit cases.

Because that's how language and imply/infer works.

These last 50 posts are like a perfect reflection of SE. Riverman stating something in an authoritative fashion that is oversimplified and incorrect followed by Phildo responding in the most condescending way imaginable.

While skiing last week, I overhead a conversation at lunch where a seemingly healthy (white), and good looking, 20 something woman was going over the numerous amounts of medication that she had forgotten to take that morning. Obviously an isolated incident and it's possible there is something wrong with her but it did seem absurd the amount of pills she was taking.

This isnt the fantastic criticism you think it is. If we had the ability to measure that kind of stuff but were ignoring it you'd have a point. Since we don't your point sucks.

Not the TV thing but this is how things are for me.

In school I was smart enough to get by but procrastinating, lack of focus, lack of follow through and laziness if you care to call it definitely kept me from reaching close to my full potential. Grad school was where it became more of a problem, probably due to lack of structure, and so I have a Master's and not a Ph.D.

Other than the tardiness that started this topic, here are a few other day-to-day things:
- I lose my car keys more than anyone I know. They're usually in my last pair of shorts or coat but sometimes I set them in weird places without thinking, like on top of the fridge.
- If I get a glass out of the cupboard I'm a coin flip to close it. This used to drive my wife nuts, and probably still does. We greatly improved things by writing "CLOSE ME" on the inside of them. It feels pretty ****ing embarrassing to require such measures for a task so simple, but it was effective.
- I often fail to plan ahead with clothing. So say we're going to a barbecue that will go into the evening. If it's warm when I leave I'll forget to bring a sweatshirt unless someone reminds me.
- I have broken the battery cover on several remotes. When watching TV, without realizing it, I'll open and close the battery compartment over and over. I don't have the hyperactive symptoms all that bad, I definitely don't feel driven by a motor or always on the go, but I fidget and mess with stuff like that all the time.

The motor ticks with the remote may suggest you have extremely mild Tourette's fwiw. Not worth getting diagnosed though.

From what you're saying there's something more than ADHD tho

I do all this except the keys, and i havent broken stuff but i do fidget like the remote example. The gf gets real mad as she always comes home to open cabinets.

I'm always early, though. Not sure these are related to anything or just stuff people do.

Re: SE FAQ, Liveblog & Tardiness

Perhaps it's comorbid, but fidgeting and messing with stuff with your hands is pretty common in tests and books as an ADHD symptom. I do know there are other disorders where it shows up - my host brother in Spain had full-blown autism and would twirl something in his hands 99% of the time he was awake.
