Yes. The answer is nobody.

He found it when he was moving house or something a month or 2 later.

Re: SE FAQ, Liveblog & FREE MONEY!!!

The inevitable has finally happened - Party Poker has implemented skill matching in its ring games.

Assuming they handle some of the details correctly, this is clearly correct strategy on their part and something I thought was a huge opportunity for the first site to fully execute it. 2p2 grinders may be a bit upset tho based on that thread. LOL at all the pros going "those greedy bastards" because omg a for profit business is looking out for its own profits and not the profits of the pro poker player. At least some of the posters in that thread seem to get it.

so you're surprised only a small minority of people on a site full of poker grinders get poker grinding being rendered impossible?

there are far better ways to achieve the same end than by having low volume players playing only against low volume players and having the high volume players not play anymore

I'm surprised that on a site of above average IQ people, so many seem to think it's a terrible business decision. It's one thing to say, "this sucks for me but I get it" and another to be all "this is ******ed they have no clue what they're doing.

Not really. I mean, limits on tables, changing the player rewards structure to only reward fish, aggressively trying to stop HUD use, etc. all are viable, but this is the most elegant, effective way to achieve the goal.

The site doesn't really care all that much care if the winning poker player leaves, provided there's enough liquidity left.

Put (over) simply: There is one source of money, the casual player. There are two outflows: winning players and rake. The site doesn't care about losing the winning players. The sites spend astronomical marketing dollars to acquire new players, and then splits the revenue with the winning players (sites actually get a minority share!).

This move not only disincentivizes the winning players, it converts a certain number of them into net rake generators.

They recently sold OnGame, which had pretty good math to calculate player skill level. I presume all they did was replicate it (not that hard really, basically the same way pros can use HUDs to calculate who the fish are).

initial shock and outrage of something this drastic will always precede understanding. nothing particularly surprising about that

limits on tables and banning huds go a long way on its own without resorting to something like this

and it's not so much caring that the winning player leaves, it's caring that the average grinder leaves, and the latter is obv a big deal. even after 70% RB, a SNE grinder for instance generates 55k in rake annually for stars. how many casual players who you bring in with such a strategy make up for the 55k that leaves the site after such an implementation?

But that $55k is a mirage. They are transferring the money from the casual player to Stars, and charging Stars a pretty hefty fee (the grinder's winrate) for the privilege of doing so.

Now, that has some value, as it accelerates the transfer of funds to Stars from the casual players, but it's value is only a fraction of the $55k, dependent on the player lifecycle and spillover effects.

Re: SE FAQ, Liveblog & FREE MONEY!!!

don't get me wrong, there's some schadenfreude in seeing bumhunters and 10/8 24-tablers get completely shafted (always lol'd at how quickly a HS game breaks and the wait list disintegrates when a fish leaves), but this is overreaching. how do you even classify a player as low-skill or high anyway? do you promote and relegate? how do you protect against angleshooting the system by just tanking so you're classified with the low-skill players?

Re: SE FAQ, Liveblog & FREE MONEY!!!

It seems like the Party Poker model would be a horrible idea in theory, since it should alienate regs, and cause them to go to another site. And I'd imagine those regs are responsible for a very large percentage of the generated rake.

But in reality, I'd guess that people will say they're going to leave, but never do, hoping they are the ones that stick around while all the good players leave.

i definitely see what you're saying here but that's still something of an oversimplification. we're assuming the casual player getting grinded off will contribute more rake over the life of his bankroll without the grinder there, which is probably true, but the rate of acceleration of the rake generation the grinder creates is enormous. that the casual player will play the tiniest of fractions of hands the grinder will play means that in order to compensate for that rate of acceleration you need to have an ENORMOUS influx of new casual players to compensate for the loss of the grinders you're going to have

of course my mistake here is assuming the grinders leave. though in theory that SHOULD be what happens, it's quite possible they stick around anyway

Re: SE FAQ, Liveblog & FREE MONEY!!!

as a former grinder (but not of the 10k hands a day variety) who would like to play semi-seriously again I support this. Anything to take the game selection "skill" out of the game and have the playing aspect be the important part of generating winrate and profit is something I'd prefer. I'd even like something as extreme as signing on and being asked how many tables you'd like to play and having it autoseat you at that many tables (like they would in a casino if you walked up and asked the floor to play in a 2/5 game) where leaving means you have to leave all games and wait an hour would be cool. Every serious player knows how to game select so it just becomes a waiting game where everyone loses time.
