I too thought ACO was overrated. It's a decent movie but Kubrick is just ****ing weird. Just because a movie is weird does not make it good. What's wrong with Generic James Cameron or Steven Spielberg? Nothing.

Dude 2001 straight up sucks. That is a boring movie.

That said, The Shining is very awesome and Dr. Strangelove (or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb) is a good old movie.

Also, he went to Taft, and I ****ing hate kids that went to Taft.

edit: I loved Spartacus.

editx2: Wow, didn't realize some of the other movies he did. wowie

editx3: Scratch that, great pick. Why did I ignore Kubrick? Jesus so many epically great movies.

For example, I'd say how Kubrick has range; he has directed class horror type movies (Clockwork Orange) to full range of sci fi (2001 Space Odyssey) to old classic epics (Spartacus) etc. I'd make note of how these movies not only made alot of money but were also critically acclaimed. So, you're building in both directions

Kenneth Branagh's Hamlet is one of the greatest films ever made. I'm dead serious. It's the only full adaptation of the play (4+ hours) in film and it's amazing.

As noted I said "I didn't see Kubrick going first".

He's not my #1 director. i don't know what's wrong with that.

Popular vote IMO does matter in this discussion. In consideration of that, Shawshank is clearly top 30 or whatever.

OOT has discussed Shawshank in depth. It gets the super serious filmies supremely rustled to hear people call it a great movie.

As you get older you realize how cheesy it is. I'd say it's 50/50 that it's a top 100 movie OAT.

#1 on IMDB is such a joke. And yes, the internet (read: the people who live on the internet like us) is not representative of the general public. 100% of Americans having internet access does not mean the IMDB votes are indicative of the general public.

Every movie Kubrick made is better than Shawshank so that basically knocks it out of the top 10 right there.

Shawshank is idealistic nonsense that panders at a pretty low level. It's entertaining enough though.

If I knew I was dying tomorrow I'd certainly watch Sandlot over Shawshank.
+1

How can anyone hate on The Sandlot? One of the GOAT movies.

To Chilltown, I am in the group saying Shawshank, while entertaining, is not on GOAT level due to aforementioned cheese factor. I'd say my 3 GOAT movies are the 2 Godfathers and Pulp Fiction. I really like Silence of the Lambs also.

Also, I've said it before, but Sarcastic Rat is one of 2p2's finest. Doesn't get influenced by the hive mind. Mixes sports knowledge with innovative theories about the internet's movie watching habits. Truly a jack of all trades.

How do you go from "I loved Spartacus" "Wow I didn't realize some of the other movies he did. wowie." "great pick [first overall in a Hollywood dynasty draft]", "Jesus, so many epically great movies." "these movies [2001, ACO] not only made a lot of money but were critically acclaimed"

"ACO is overrated" "Kubrick is just ****ing weird." "2001 straight up sucks" and "just because a movie is weird doesn't make it good"

in 4 short years without being hit in the face by a bus? Or is it 100% backlash from being severely butthurt that not everyone sucks off Shawshank?

I'm fine with Shawshank being a great movie, for what it is. Yeah, when it comes on TV I'll usually watch at least part of it. It's the ultimate TV movie - it's composed of a lot of vignettes that add up to be an entire movie and that can easily be separated via commercial (contrasted with 2001, where interrupting that with commercials is simply insane, and flipping to that movie during e.g. halftime of a football game is also insane). There are tons of way better movies, but there aren't many that I (or others) like as much.

this 100%

The sci-fi/time travel stuff is mostly convoluted nonsense, but I thought they did a great job with JG's character and his relationship with his family, especially his mom
