My understanding is they basically play a round robin against all the other teams in their "tier" home and away, is that about right? If so, yeah it's the best system out there.

There are a lot of interesting things in this world, you are not one of them. If a ****ty diaper could talk it would be you. You suck. Does that get my point across?

Yep. And there's relegation and promotion, which is awesome.

Do the clubs that are promoted do anything worthwhile or is it just another team that the Manchesters of the world run train on?

Yeah, really wish they'd have this in US sports. Obviously can't work because of TV deals and culture (Sorry Mr. Owner, your $1B team is only worth $20M now, enjoy the minors!) but it's a great thing.

Variance is best when it comes from the closeness of competition. Scheduling is a distant second in all but the most extreme set ups.

Each Country Has at least two main competitions:

1) League - Each team plays every other team home and away. Top points wins. Promotion/Relegation makes the lower divisions super interesting late in the year. Specifically, the playoffs in the English Championship are said to be the highest stakes for any sporting event.

2) Cup - Tournament for the country. Most of the time they're open to just about every team in the country with the higher division teams coming in later rounds. Works how you think, either single elimination, home and home, or a replay system depending on the league and round.

Then there's the Champions League. There's some preliminary rounds for ****ty leagues, but it really gets going with 8 groups of 32 teams. Top 2 advance in each group. Each elimination round consists of a home and home until the championship, which is single game at a preselected site, like the super bowl. Championship league elimination games are ****ing awesome.

I'd absolutely ****ing love to see promotion/relegation introduced into the American soccer system, but I don't see it ever happening because the league wasn't developed organically. The owners will all band together to make sure that relegation never happens, while promotion/relegation happens in europe because there are tons of teams/traditions and yadadadada

Jimmy Page is a fan of Chelsea so if I ever started giving a **** about soccer I'd probably just root for them.

Re: SE FAQ, Liveblog and ... wat?

english championship (2nd level, just below premier league) is awesome.

20 teams, bottom 3 get relegated to league one (3rd level)
top 2 get promoted to premier league
4-team playoff (3, 4, 5, 6th place teams) to get the final promotion spot

Re: SE FAQ, Liveblog and ... wat?

Just want to lol at anyone who thinks that promotion/relegation would be a good thing for US sports. We have 300 million people, we can support a full league of 32 teams and don't have to spice things up for the have nots perpetually stuck in the middle/bottom of the league. If Europe ever says **** domestic competition and creates a super league, there won't be any relegation there either, super teams only need apply.

They have a super league. It has promotion/relegation through qualification.

Well obviously it would work better in US if there were a bunch of smaller regional leagues that had organically formed, like BPL in northeast, la liga in the southeast, etc

If the old national association had stuck around we might actually have something close to resembling that. NA possibly sharing some overlap with an AA, PL, or FL, then a (mid)Western league, southern league, PCL, etc. I often fantasize about an OOTP multicentury dynasty kinda playing this alternative league evolution out

Eventually a north American champions league (including Caribbean) and then even including Asia. And of course a real world cup instead of stupid WBC
