No, the MLS is definitely growing a ton. In 2005, average attendance was 15,108. In 2012, average attendance was 18,807. A 24% increase per game is pretty big, but they've added 7 teams. 2005 total attendance was 2.9m. 2012 was 6.1m.

that being said, the conference finals and NBA Finals are pretty sweet

You guys are throwing out parity and competitive balance as arguments assuming that they are good and I'm not sure you can 100% say that. For example the English Premier League does very well and has less parity than the NBA. Would the EPL do better with a salary cap? Idk.

This is pretty fair. NBA fans are a pretty stupid bunch and prefer 2 super teams over a wide open field.

When you combine a 16 team playoff with almost no parity, that's a vastly different situation than the EPL. The Spurs woudn't sit half their team every third game if the goal was to win the regular season

EPL you want to win, get top 4, get top 5 and don't want to be bottom 3. Plus regular season is the only thing that matters. Plus different tournaments you can succeed in. Vastly different than NBA

Also in baseball.

My point is that theoretically leagues are structured to maximize the utility functions and preferences of the owners, and since fans drive revenue, by the fans. You can't call these preferences wrong. If NBA and EPL owners and fans wanted parity, the league structure would have changed by now.

What are you suggesting to change it? Parity in the NBA is a product of the nature of the game, not the system. There's a reason parity has never existed in the NBA.

Why do you think I'm suggesting they change it? The NBA is doing "well" by giving fans 2-3 teams with a chance to win each year. It's what the fans want. I think those fans are mouth-breathing idiots, but I wouldn't suggest the NBA try to increase parity because it's not what their inbred fanbase demands.

And yeah, the nature of the game pretty much allows for one or two stars to take over a game to the point that, without rule changes, parity is impossible/

ya trying to create parity in the nba would just result in lebron's team being even more dominant imo

So parity is impossible but parity doesn't exist because the NBA is catering to its mouth breathing, inbred, idiot fans? Cool story bro

Well an actual Hard cap with no player cap might help a little bit. Allowing your top 10 players (or more?) to be seriously underpaid allows teams to sign several to max deals. Of course, players can just take pay cuts anyway and removing the player cap/home team bonuses may just cause a lack of retention in the teams that need it most. Not sure which way that would actually go in practice.

The "nature of the game" isn't why the elite NBA players gravitate toward a handful of markets though. It's something outside of the game that the NBA doesn't have much control over* that nonetheless probably benefits the league as a whole.

wat

I'm sure there are rules or fundamental changes the NBA could make that might lessen the difference between LeBron and the field, but unless they do, he's still head and shoulder above and other "elites" are going to be able to have huge impacts just the same. That's not the point.

The point is that NBA fans overwhelmingly support super teams and don't support wide-open competition, so there's seemingly zero reason for the NBA to change its model.

Re: SE FAQ, Liveblog and White Folks Discuss The Wire Again

Why is the NFL (lots of parity) more popular than the MLB and NBA (less parity) in the US? Reasons I can think of:
1. people like seeing other people hit each other (i.e. people like the game of football more than other sports)
2. all/most games on a Sunday (a day of relaxation)
3. only 16 games so each game matters more
4. fantasy football/gambling
5. competitive balance, driven by hard salary caps and TV revenue sharing

Personally I think #1-4 are bigger than #5
