Not trying to stir pot, legitimately curious here.

For those of you who can't stand or watch zero NBA, what are the reasons why?

aside from marquee matchups the NBA is pretty boring until the playoffs.

I mean this in that you kind of know who is going to make the playoffs, who can actually win a championship, etc. so the regular season kind of becomes devoid of any tension/drama and turns into a boring jostle for seeding.

I'm an NBA fan but this is a pretty good post. The NBA compared to the other 3 major sports doesn't lend itself well to a lower seed making a run very often in the playoffs. I guess I don't have the $tats available to $how my work there, but who's the last low seed to win an nba title?

Meanwhile you've got the KANGZ winning the cup as an 8 seed, Giants and Ravens shipping it all as underdogs the whole playoffs the last two years, and baseball wild cards do the damn thing often.

So if the last few teams don't have much of a shot in the playoffs, the race to get in kinda sucks. Who cares which team the Spurs or Heat poop on in round one etc. Meanwhile in other sports if you get in, you've got a legit shot to make something happen.

#1 reason by far: I find it to be too stop-start. So many timeouts, free throws, ad breaks. Free throws especially. God there are a lot of free throws. NFL is much more fluid in comparison.

#2: If i'm watching NBA, it's on a stream. I suspect HD might make a difference.

seems pretty reasonable to me. obviously as a sport basketball is more fluid than football. as a viewing experience I think it is decidedly different.

a penalty in football takes 15 seconds to explain and then the teams huddle and it's back to the game. a foul gets called in basketball and the game is paused for a few minutes while everyone lines up and someone takes two shots. and it happens a lot. and a break in the action such as a huddle probably doesn't bother you any more than the time in-between pitches during a baseball game.

also, it's all unpredictable with the NBA. you watch an NFL game and you generally know when the breaks are coming--after scores, punts, timeouts, etc. with the NBA, timeouts/commercials occur at more random points, there could be a foul on five consecutive possessions, you just don't know.

fwiw I don't necessarily agree with BAIDS, but I think it's a reasonable perspective to have. especially if you're a euro that grew up watching "football"

If you're watching too many Thunder games, then you could probably get annoyed by FT breaks. But even when there's a ton of FTs, it doesn't happen after every play. In the NFL, you literally get 4-10 seconds of game action for every 40 seconds of downtime. In the NBA, you get constant, interrupted action on the regular. It's one of the real advantages it has in terms of a viewing experience. You also don't get the whole touchdown/commercial/kickoff/commercial sequence which is the most tilting thing ever. You get some of that in college ball because of the mandatory TV timeouts, but the NBA avoids that.

I enjoy playing pickup basketball but I don't like the NBA and never have.

1. Corrupt refs
2. David Stern is Satan
3. Every game is tied until :18 left
4. Fouls non-stop during the last 2 minutes of the game
5. Traveling is never called anymore. I think Shaq ruined the game for me.
6. Flopping
7. Pussies play a game every third night
8. Sport wayyyy too dominated by few superstars (everyone knows Kobe + LeBron will go deep every year prior to this one)
10. Stern fines JVG 100K for calling a ref corrupt, only to find a few years later that ref was corrupt and the game was rigged.

Probably other stuff. Mostly I think the entire league is rigged and you only have to watch the last 5 minutes of a game (Hey look 5 minutes left and it's 87-86. BIG SHOCKER)

Last time I really watched was a few years back when Houston went deep with the Lakers. It was painfully obvious that Houston had no shot to actually win that series. Not wasting my time with such a ridiculous organization.

But again I love playing it and anytime I visit my parents house my brother, dad, and I try to get a game of 21 going.

It's all about what makes you happy imo. 250k and 70+ hour work weeks would be a failure to me. 250k and 40-50 would be awesome.

NBA can be incredible, which gets it above soccer and baseball, bit rarely is, and is legit rigged, leaving it miles below football.

While 20 teams don't matter in the NBA, football def has too much variance. Legit tilting to see 10-6'ish teams donking SB's on the reg now.

do you think its fair to say that this is true in all regards except MLS? i cant think of 1 time in my entire life i have heard a person reference wanting to go to an MLS game or wanting to watch one on TV.

for me its (what appears to be) the widespread lack of effort, especially on defense, in the regular season. likely as a result of everyone basically knowing who the last 4 teams are going to be when the season starts etc.

this

mlb/nhl/nfl you can usually make a legitimate case that for almost half the league running hot and winning it all. nba there's 4 teams (6 if you wanna include bulls + rose and clippers) who have a legitimate chance. it's pretty much just going through the motions until the conference semis. the game is just so superstar dominated that barring injury there's no real chance for parity, which on one hand is good cuz you want to see the best play the best when it matters most but on the other hand where's the suspense leading up to it?
