S3? Really? I love parts of S3 of Deadwood, but I think overall that's its weakest season.

I enjoyed Mouzone's character too, but I can see why people didn't like him considering what kind of show the Wire was.

No way. I guess if you view it as a 'final' season it disappoints some viewers, but most fans know it wasn't supposed to be.

The Hearst introduction brings such a great dynamic and makes Al an even more compelling lead.

Show is fully realized and at peak in episodes like 'I Am Not The Man You Take Me For' and fire fully brought in episode like 'Two Headed Beast'

Think Milch got the most out of everyone, but really we just saw the best and most effective Swearegnen, which was the primary motor for the show anyway

I would go 3>2=1 but they are all really great, I just think Milch and writers got better and more interesting

Re: SE FAQ, Liveblog and White Folks Discuss The Wire Again

EDIT: Guess I was wrong about Deadwood finale. Guess everyone was wrong at the time though. Even Sepinwall admits he thought Milch didn't know it was the finale. Interesting.

(Questions begins about Luck)

Quote:
I watched the finale again yesterday, and there are a number of moments and lines that feel prophetic — like Marcus saying, "Today's the day they take it all away from us," or Ace's speech at the end — like they were designed to be in a series finale. And that's always how I've viewed the last "Deadwood" episode; like it was a series finale without being intended as one. Were you ever thinking as you wrote this that there would be a chance you wouldn't get to do more?

No, there was no sense of that on my part. By way of contrast, I absolutely knew when I was writing the last "Deadwood" that it would be the last, and I wrote it intending it as the finale.

Interesting. I had never heard that before.

That's the case. I was trying — the last images of Swearengen scrubbing the bloodstain and saying "Wants me to tell him something pretty," that was as close as I felt I could come to a concluding speech.

Re: SE FAQ, Liveblog and White Folks Discuss The Wire Again

I am not disappointed that the show doesn't 'end' properly - and while Milch might've known he was writing the series finale, that doesn't mean he knew he was writing the final season. So there's some things that happen that never pay off (Brian Cox's character and his troupe coming to mind). And there's some characters who just kind of are around and don't really do much.

I just re-watched Deadwood and I go 2>1>>3. 3 is still really good, though, and I'll admit the writing continued to get more interesting as the show went along. Still, the plotting sometimes suffered.

Re: SE FAQ, Liveblog and White Folks Discuss The Wire Again

You're right that the direction of the season matters more than an episode.

I wonder how many episodes he wrote knowing the show was ending. Just the finale?

Love how Nath jokingly mentioning The Wire in an attempt to get the conversation off of religion/politics did actually manage to produce pages of The Wire talk.
