I grew up in Wheaton Illinois and half of my childhood friends are literalist evangelical fundamentalists. When I started thinking about it for myself in high school I pretty quickly became agnostic (as far as my friends are concerned I'm a de facto atheist but strictly speaking I'm agnostic), and the lifelong conversation I've had about religion has been without question one of the top-five defining topics for me. One of my best friends (super smart/successful, would make a great jury member and applies scientific method to his life at a deep level without exactly realizing it) just left on Monday to take his family on a nine-month missions trip to freaking Bangalore.

I'm a strong believer in the Golden Rule as credo, and in ubi dubium ibi libertas and all that, but the older I get the more I'm convinced that a lot of variations found within populations that can be so frustrating to all of us (differences in empathy, tolerance, aggressiveness, liberal/conservative stuff, predilection towards faith, etc) are here to stay. That as frustrating as they can be to each of us as individuals, that somehow our entire group is benefiting from all the irreconcilability, which seems ancient and ubiquitous almost to the point where I have to wonder if the balance has somehow evolved into us on a group level.

Also, the next time I have meat and mashed potatoes, I think I'll put a very large blob of potatoes on my plate with just a little piece of meat. And if somone asks me why I didn't get more meat, I'll just say, "Oh, you mean this?" and pull out a big piece of meat from inside the blob of potatoes, where I've hidden it.

I remember fondly the olden days of SE when politarding or religiotarding would result in a snap ban.
