that ad MASSIVELY tilted me when i saw it for the first time. i wanted to call the # on the screen to tell them how much it tilted me and start listing off the "accomplishments" of the man they are glorifying in the ad.

of course, they are well aware of such things and wouldn't care

(it's an ad for Citgo)

Bought some popcorn for the road today because that's cheaper than buying smaller pants and lazier than punching new holes in my belt.

Thought truckers were supposed to gain weight not lose it

it's just the extremes that people are willing to take to cause imposition and hardship on themselves and those around them in the name of god that drives me ****ing insane. my grandparents on my mom's side, extremely religious people. my grandmother, absurdly uneducated. can't read. mother of 9. my grandfather, who died almost 20 years ago from lung cancer, deeply conservative man. disapproved of my mom marrying my dad and subsequently hated my dad because he wasn't as religious as my grandfather. anyway, my grandparents were wealthy. don't remember how, i think they owned a lot of land back in their homeland, idk. on my grandfather's death bed, despite living his ENTIRE life following his religion, every moment without exception, was worried he might go to hell. soooooooo, he told my grandmother to liquidate everything they owned and give it to their ****ing church so they would pray for his soul and ensure he went to heaven. i mean, this was a substantial sum of money. and my grandmother, because she shared his concerns for whatever ****ing reason, obliged this.

just hard to take that seriously, really
lol. wow. that's harsh.

I grew up in Wheaton Illinois and half of my childhood friends are literalist evangelical fundamentalists. When I started thinking about it for myself in high school I pretty quickly became agnostic (as far as my friends are concerned I'm a de facto atheist but strictly speaking I'm agnostic), and the lifelong conversation I've had about religion has been without question one of the top-five defining topics for me. One of my best friends (super smart/successful, would make a great jury member and applies scientific method to his life at a deep level without exactly realizing it) just left on Monday to take his family on a nine-month missions trip to freaking Bangalore.

I'm a strong believer in the Golden Rule as credo, and in ubi dubium ibi libertas and all that, but the older I get the more I'm convinced that a lot of variations found within populations that can be so frustrating to all of us (differences in empathy, tolerance, aggressiveness, liberal/conservative stuff, predilection towards faith, etc) are here to stay. That as frustrating as they can be to each of us as individuals, that somehow our entire group is benefiting from all the irreconcilability, which seems ancient and ubiquitous almost to the point where I have to wonder if the balance has somehow evolved into us on a group level.

Also, the next time I have meat and mashed potatoes, I think I'll put a very large blob of potatoes on my plate with just a little piece of meat. And if somone asks me why I didn't get more meat, I'll just say, "Oh, you mean this?" and pull out a big piece of meat from inside the blob of potatoes, where I've hidden it.

Laurie was offended that I used the word "puke", but to me, that's what her dinner tasted like.
