Solid point but I sort of disagree on the opportunity costs. We've thrown out so many hypotheticals I'm not sure exactly which one to address, but in the original one etats mentioned, you make choices and no matter what there's going to be a cost (like for instance maybe you have to choose between exercise and sunlight). Maybe your mom is really old and you miss one of her last years. It's different for everyone, but the point is there's a lot of implicit costs one could argue. For instance, for me, if i missed a year, I likely wouldn't be able to celebrate another giants/niners world championship with my friends, which would really suck. I could have 40 oz of freedom by myself, but what fun is that?
I think it may Just be a difference of perspective or opinion the cost of time or one year or my life is valuable to me - I'd me mad if I missed out. I've known enough people who did time and talked to them about it to be privy to the dangers of solitary confinement, enough such that I value my freedom tremendously. For me I'd sacrifice a fair bit of ev to be able to go outside once a week or to have a shorter duration of time, but that sort of goes against the spirit of the hypothetical. i also think people over estimate the effect of a large sum of money has on their happiness. im at work and dont have the citations on me but research seems to suggest that once youre "financially stable" that extra money after this threshold pretty much doesnt affect your happiness . off hand, i know that mean incomes have been rising in america for a long time and happiness (self reported) has been the same. Clark and zee made a good point also About needing the money up front and requiring the ability to invest. I'm in the minority with c vig I guess but there v little scenarios where I'm doing this.
