HIMYM was super solid seasons 1-3, maybe 4, then it's just sucked. It was a comedy driven by storyline more than just jokes, and well, when you refuse to move the storyline of the main character in any meaningful way the show falls apart.

Never understood why we don't just meet the mother in season 4 or 5 and then go on with their relationship beginnings. Would be a much better show.

I've only seen the first 2 seasons (waiting for S3 on Netflix) but imo Archer is the funniest show on TV.

More jokes packed into 22 minutes than any show I've ever seen.

Good list, Das Boot. Apart from Arrested Development & early Futurama, haven't watched any of those.

Hey, pal, did you get a load of the nerd?

Thanks. Just queued it up. It's always recommended for me, but have never had my interest piqued.

Archer probably the strangest show I don't like given the rest of my tastes. Just never did it for me. Something about the tone, I think. Too fratty, or maybe just slightly too aware of how clever it is.

Workaholics is great, though. Does what it does excellently.

I don't think anything will ever top Arrested Development on this front.

Sadly, four shows I watch aired their final episodes sometime in the last two weeks (30 Rock being the only one that wasn't outright cancelled). That makes my current comedy lineup: Bob's Burgers, Happy Endings, Parks and Recreation, Archer, Suburgatory, New Girl. Community will rejoin the list next week. Louie, Wilfred, It's Always Sunny, and Curb Your Enthusiasm are on the list whenever they air. Sometimes I watch Cougar Town and Raising Hope.

Idea: SE comedy seasons draft. Max 2 seasons drafted per show. I feel like drafting seasons instead of shows will naturally lead itself to a higher and more interesting level of discussion. It also avoids the conundrum of what to do with e.g. American Office, which had two very good seasons' worth of material but kept churning out episodes for syndication for another 50 years.

I can't run it (now, at least), but it might be a good one for the future if SE hasn't done anything similar.

bbt has some funny episodes from the first season or whichever is on tbs but i have no desire to watch the new ones. same with himym

workaholics was also elite early on but this season is not very good. the league too.

basically all tv comedies should stop after three seasons.

Admittedly I don't watch that many TV comedies (which is weird because I love comedy) - I just find it oppressive to listen to that many jokes. There's so goddamn many. I get why people like it though.

Best thing about Archer is rewatching it and catching jokes you never noticed/got before.

Yeah, I like Archer, but for whatever reason it doesn't stick with me as much as, say, Bob's Burgers.

It does seem that part of it is that Archer goes "all outlandish, all the time" which can be really funny but at the pace they go it almost doesn't give jokes room to breathe.

Yeah, some shows can have a decent 5-6 season peak. Just that most are still run into the ground to squeeze even more cash out. Simpsons the obvious example; Always Sunny also managed to maintain its peak through around s6 before falling off extremely hard.

Seinfeld (w/LD) and Curb are true exceptions, but it's well known that GOATs like Larry David don't follow normal aging curves.

Curb is different because there's no pressure to put out a season every year. They just air one when Larry David gets around to writing one, and I'm thinking that means he doesn't have to force bad ideas onto the airwaves.

Not as bad as All in the Family and South Park.

But, yeah, point taken, Boot. Easily 1/20 comedies that are really, really good are bad after s3.

Yeah, all this stuff (the whole HBO creative freedom/not chasing syndication money) is definitely a factor. Most HBO comedies still only last for a couple quality seasons, though. They just stop after they run out of ideas instead of forcing out seasons. And Curb's 8 seasons span 2000-2011, so it's not like LD's taken that many sabbaticals.
