Re: SE FAQ, Liveblog and Pronunciation Guide

How in the world can anybody say the '60s were bad for music? The last half of the decade alone was probably better than any other decade. ANd the first half gave us a lot of good motown tunes from guys and girls. And the lesser known "pre-British-invasion" British bands. I'd rate the decades thusly:

'60s
'80s
'90s
'70s
'00s

I'd say there is a very large gap between the 60s and 80s and a very small gap between the '80s and '90s. Really I may put the 90s in 2nd place. Big gap between the 90s and 70s, and a noticeable gap between '70s and '00s.

I really really hate modern music. I get that I may just be oldmanyellingatcloud but I just rarely like any of it. I'm not going out of my way to not like it, either.

'80s music is way underrated. It's always been fashionable to hate on '80s music but I really like the decade.

'90s I give a lot of credit to in the sense that both rap and country went mainstream, and it got out of the hair metal era. And it's when I started getting into music. But the last 3-4 years largely sucked hairy dick with the influx of Creed/Spice Girls/Boy Bands/Spears/Xtina, etc. Lou Perlman took a massive smelly dump on all our faces.

I forgot to mention Surrealistic Pillow when I mentioned the 60s. Everyone knows "Somebody to Love" and "White Rabbit", but I really dig the title track:

And two tracks from two of my favorite 60s albums no one else has mentioned

I think this is why it's kind of arbitrary to separate music eras by decades. In my mind there's phases that are strong, like 88-96 or late 60s-76 and **** eras like 1997-2010 or whatever. And then it's even more disjointed when you break it down by genre or see how a ton of great bands don't really fit into one decade.

I don't think it's backinmydayism to recognize modern music as really bad comparatively, sooner or later we were bound to hit the worst period of music and I think it was from like 2003-2010 or something. That period sucked epically. Looking at 72off's list those are all "good" bands, but you could name equivalently good bands from the 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s that haven't even been mentioned yet and are nowhere near the best of that time period.

In all seriousness, the 1960's, especially the late 1960's, was responsible for such great music that all other decades completely pale in comparison.

Re: SE FAQ, Liveblog and Pronunciation Guide

The '70s were not that good, fellas. It was basically a lot of bands trying to emulate Zeppelin and they turned it into Arena Rock. Then, of course, the worst music ever, disco. Some really pussy 'golden oldies' crap thrown in.

Some good carryover bands from the '60s still put out some good stuff, but their sound is largely attributed to the '60s. Some pretty good bands like AC/DC, Seger, Aerosmith, etc. came on pretty strong. Van Halen near the end of the decade. The Jackson Five/MJ era took shape.

Overall, pretty ****ty stuff though. When I think of the '70s, I think of like...Steve Miller or some other cheese rock band. Bad Company, Steely Dan, Boston... decent groups but a huge drop-off from the very talented British bands of the '60s. Quite a mess of a decade for music imo.

I guess I consider second wave British bands like Pink Floyd, the Who, Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin to be 70s. Plus the whole siouthern rock thing with Creedence, Skynard, CSNY etc.

Re: SE FAQ, Liveblog and Pronunciation Guide

The "vibe" of the 60s really extends a few years into the 70s. I'd say what we think of culturally as "the 60s' is more like 64-72.

Speaking of 1972, Neil Young - After the Gold Rush

I associate the 70s with Ramones/The Clash/Pistols. I'm not that into punk music but when I'm cleaning or something, I often get the urge to fire up one of those bad boys.

Re: SE FAQ, Liveblog and Pronunciation Guide

This whole "judging an entire decade of music by 5-10 bands" thing doesn't make much sense to me.

For me, as a listener, it's all about quantity + diversity of good/great bands, which is why I think the more recent decades crush. (Part of it might be that most of those good but not elite 60s bands have kind of been lost, while nowadays basically every band has a platform.)
