I posted this in the Mad Men thread, UoC is quite good ... if you enjoy french language musicals with no unsung dialogue and costumes that match perfectly with wallpaper.

2000- I guess American Beauty / Being John Malkovich
This is a good choice for 1998. I'll take this instead of Good Will Hunting.

Alright I'll give it a try but I'm going by IMDB release years since it would otherwise take forever to figure out which year they were Oscar eligible.

2000 - You Can Count on Me
2001 - Mulholland Dr.
2002 - Minority Report
2003 - The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King
2004 - Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
2005 - The New World
2006 - Once
2007 - The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford
2008 - In Bruges
2009 - Inglourious Basterds

I guess you have to +1 all of them to get the Oscar year.

Man 2008 is terrible.

Without wading into the conversation or fact-checking I'm almost sure that Boogie Nights came out before 1998. It's one of my top five favorite films ever and I think it lost out whatever year it was nominated to some big box office Tom Hanks-like formulaic crap.

Tom Hanks, opiate of the masses.

It's not great but lol @ 2008 I can't pick any. No good movies came out that year. Fact.

I don't mind Slumdog winning. It's pretty close to the best of 2008.

Haven't seen that last one (4 Months..) but I didn't like TDK, Wrestler, or Wall-E. I'm actually just fine with saying Slumdog Millionaire tbh. Or if we can go the documentary route I'll say Dear Zachary is the best.

Is Dear Zachary that movie that is impossibly sad. Like so sad that i'd probably start crying a bit if I read the wikipedia summary?

slumdog was a huge fail, i mean it's well-made and all, but it's kind of hateful. i liked it, and who knows, maybe it becomes canonical in like 20 years as a classic love story or redemption story, but it was meh

Slumdog would've been so much better if the whole story never happened and it was all just a level imo.
