Then if you get selected, you get to go through the minor leagues, get paid ****, and still have a very slim chance of ever making it big.
It's not surprising that making it in the officiating world is about who you know - it's impossible to evaluate officials on a good enough scale such that advancement + demotion would be for objective reasons.
I am genuinely surprised that there are significantly more would-be applicants than there are umpires though.
