Then if you get selected, you get to go through the minor leagues, get paid ****, and still have a very slim chance of ever making it big.
It's not surprising that making it in the officiating world is about who you know - it's impossible to evaluate officials on a good enough scale such that advancement + demotion would be for objective reasons.

I am genuinely surprised that there are significantly more would-be applicants than there are umpires though.

well thats mainly because the number of umpires needed is a set #

and the rate that die/retire/quit/etc is probably less than the rate of people who start umpiring, or are continuing to umpire

i mean since you can feasibly start when you are 12 or 13 and do it into your 60s there is a large pool that is only gonna keep growing

yeah but who wants to do it, like you said, you get a completely horrible job unless you make it to the majors and what, 2% of umps do? and that's leaving aside the notion that umpires are universally disliked and scorned people, though judging by your posting such things don't bother you. i guess though people do it for little league etc. and get the itch and think they might want to do it on a higher level, but still being a police officer takes the same mentality and there's no doubt more job openings there

yeah, i think its just a natural cause to be pretty good at something and want to push yourself.

if I didnt injure my achilles I was gonna do some college training and do NCAA this year but im out for the preseaon and am stuck in Varsity HS land. Hope to get some reigonal post-season games though maybe, have done district tournament only so far.

and a lot of people enjoy it too. ive heard some guys find a temp job in the city they get sent too and work part time around their game schedules.

either that or they treat it like a paid vacation almost, considering the amount of hours you are actually working the pay isnt bad and its usually in a tropical area/florida.

and of course there is always the chance that you can move up. i think it would be awesome to do some high level baseball like that. best seat in the house.

Or we just rolling gameday threads as of now.

when your team is named after tony romo you get what you deserve

I assume every time Romo sees that commercial, he thinks it would be a great idea for the real players to get a second chance at the playoffs too

Hahahahaha. Not going to wade back into that thread but this is amazing. It reminds me of that scene in St. Elmo's Fire where Rob Lowe and his wife get into a throwdown at the bar, had to be separated by the cops and then like a minute later are making out. Total white trash.
