I've watched that trilogy so much and love it more and more. I really enjoyed it after reading the books again and seeing just how well they did all things considered. Shelob being in the 3rd movie is weird but because Tolkien was a crazy bastard it must have been so hard to adapt that to to a movie.

They really did a great job with it. Gimli>Legolas too.

Like I said it was a quick list while scanning through films that got some nominations in those years. The more productive thing would be to give your own list as a counterpoint

I've read it. Its basically the Middle Earth equivalent of the Old Testament and tbh fairly dense/tough to read. Tolkien was a crazy mother ****er though. His books have a ton more meaning to them then most people think. Just fascinating stuff imo.

Same with Valkyrie, that being my undergrad concentration I thought Valkyrie was epic because it did a great job of being entertaining and keeping the historical accuracy.

Though when I watch movies I turn my brain off almost instantly and don't get into it to much wrt storylines and stuff of the fiction movies. I basically like anything I watch that has cool fight scenes/funny/has tits.

1996 - Casino
1997 - Fargo
1998 - Good Will Hunting (F Titanic)
1999 - Life is Beautiful, Saving Private Ryan, or American History X would've all been acceptable, Worst best picture decision of all time imo.
2000 - The Green Mile
2001 - Requiem
2002 - Fellowship of the Ring
2003 - City of God
2004 - Return of the King
2005 - Million Dollar Baby or Hotel Rwanda
2006 - Capote
2007 - The Last King of Scotland
2008 - There Will Be Blood
2009 - The Wrestler, Frost/Nixon, Benjamin Button, bleh at Slumdog winning
2010 - Inglourious Basterds

The names and **** are what make it so hard, someone told me to go through it and give each character an easier name and it makes it easier to read.

Either way, I'd love to sit down in a class and learn about that lore. Its incredible. He created what, 3 different languages or something? WWI vets man...mustard gas ****ed with them.

Hahaha, its funny. Growing up I had to "hide" my fascination with video games that weren't nfl blitz or goldeneye and my "enjoyment for nerdy" stuff. I still hide most of it because you know, its socially unacceptable for someone like me to enjoy that stuff. I've always had such an extremely social life that my friends, when they did find out, made fun of me for "liking japanese cartoons." Haha

But yeah, I play that gettysburg scene at least once a year. RTT is such an awesome football film.

well, hatersgonnahate.gif

actually as i look at it, there's too many films i haven't seen from these years for me to make a good list. i definitely wouldn't put things like requiem for a dream or gangs of new york on my list, though. i think city of god is a better choice, though, for sure.

what the oscars really reflect are not the best films, but the good films with the most universal message. e.g. i wouldn't vote for 25th hour as an oscar winning film, but i think it's a great film in spite of its flaws.

yeah something like that.

His wiki page is worth a read through, for sure, as it will help shed some light on the meaning of his work.

I would have been happy with Fargo winning.

The Green Mile is the ultimate Magical Negro movie. Sure he's going to let himself be put to death because he's just that peaceful and magical. Oh, and his initials are J.C., in case you didn't get the allegory.

I was happy with the American Beauty win that year, and I still am. It was a good year for movies, though-- Magnolia, Fight Club, Being John Malkovich, just off the top of my head, and I know that doesn't even scratch the surface. Check out this list I found just by googling. (Hell, I'd take the Matrix or Office Space over The Green Mile. Don't forget Three Kings and Election, too.)

wow was '06 a huge fail year for movies, i can't find a pick better than capote even though capote was mediocre. match point is the best i can come up with, and capote is probably better just because of philip seymour hoffman's performance. the squid and the whale, maybe, butnahhhhh.

Since 2000 Should Win/My Favorite
2001 - Almost Famous / You Can Count on Me or American Pyscho need to rewatch YCCM
2002 - LOTR / Memento (could change once I see In the Mood for Love or Mulholland Dr.)
2003 - Adaptation / Adaptation (maybe Punch-Drunk Love)
2004 - Refraining because it seems like I haven't seen any movies from this year
2005 - Eternal Sunshine x2 (with Before sunset as a close runner up)
2006 - Haven't seen Brokeback but it's probably the choice / Squid and the Whale narrowily edges out Oldboy
2007 - United 93 x 2
2008 - TWBB/NCFOM x 2
2009 - The Wrestler x 2
2010 - The Hurt Locker/ In the Loop

I think it kind of sucks that the LOTR films have been associated with nerd culture, since they're pretty jaw-dropping feats in terms of movie making and are pretty much objectively awesome.

It's pretty awful. I'll say Once, Pan's Labyrinth, and Apocalypto were all very good. There's a few other decent movies. But yeah possibly the worst year ever.

you just like the squid and the whale because it's Brooklyn.

movies from 2000s I have a problem with not being mentioned in the discussion: as good as it gets, mystic river, sideways, district 9, and probably a dozen more.
