It's not about the other person suffering - they can slink away if they like - it's about the lulz produced when their team loses whether they're here or not.
On the other side, I think emotionally hedging about a sports team is the weakest of sauces. It's [censored] sports. It's not supposed to mean anything. If you don't have the strength of character to think your team is good when that's objectively true because you can't stomach it if they lose, find another hobby. In general, I think fans should think their team is a little better than it is, because I think that's the fun part - believing that that's the case. Others seem to think the fun part is running your own team down.
I make exceptions for fans of franchises who've been beaten down, as their response has been conditioned through years of suffering.
