Well it was weird because it had 2-3 movies that were just as Oscar-baity as Gladiator, but much better films that didn't win.
Cast Away should have won. But I don't hate Gladiator. For what it is, pretty good movie. It's not even close to one of the worst BP winners... of the decade.
No Country for Old Men
Return of the King
The Departed
Slumdog Millionaire
Gladiator
The Hurt Locker
A Beautiful Mind
Million Dollar Baby
Chicago
Crash

THIS IS A SAD GROUP OF BEST PICTURES.
I think Forrest Gump was the beginning of the end. I love Forrest Gump and think its a great movie, but the fact that it won that year over the other films nominated signaled what was to come in the 15 years since.

Big star goes half ****** = instant Oscar
Big star or director goes historical epic = instant Oscar
Since Forrest Gump, the winners imo should have been:
1996 - Casino
1997 - Fargo
1998 - Good Will Hunting (F Titanic)
1999 - Life is Beautiful, Saving Private Ryan, or American History X would've all been acceptable, Worst best picture decision of all time imo.
2000 - The Green Mile
2001 - Requiem
2002 - Fellowship of the Ring
2003 - Gangs of New York
2004 - Return of the King
2005 - Million Dollar Baby or Hotel Rwanda
2006 - Capote
2007 - The Last King of Scotland
2008 - There Will Be Blood
2009 - The Wrestler, Frost/Nixon, Benjamin Button, bleh at Slumdog winning
2010 - Inglourious Basterds
So basically, I haven't been happy often recently with the Oscars.

I'm down.
Speaking of which, I thought two towers > RotK > Fellowship
Curious to what people think(I know this list doesn't portray that, Gangs was such an awesome movie).

Amongst well known movies that got at least a nomination in something that I could see while perusing the awards year by year. I'm sure there were probably some awesome movies that I overlooked, considering thinking about it I definitely would've given City of God Best Picture and failed to name it in that list.

Yeah, Gangs was awesome. I thought the LOTR movies were really well done and wouldn't have had a problem with them winning 3 in a row otherwise, but I'm sure that view would get tons of hate.
All three should have/could have won Best Picture imo.
Thats how I had them ranked until I saw the extended version. The extended version of Fellowship made me enjoy it much more. Though I still have it 3rd outta the trilogy, it became much closer.
Tolkien was a crazy mother ****er. I still want to read the Sillimarion or however you spell it. One day I'll get to it.
