We can't assume that the kids are aware enough that they can decline to be interviewed if they don't want to discuss it.
I'm under the complete assumption that the news needs the expressed permission of the parent before asking these kids questions. If this is wrong then my entire perspective changes.
I'm basically assuming that the kid's parent(s) are there and the reporter asks the parents if it's OK to interview the kid, at which point the parent makes the decision based on whether or not they think the child can handle it.
