Eh, yeah if you can stay on your MI insurance until you get your company car I wouldn't even bother switching over. Q1 2013 is really soon for that much hassle.

There's so much room for comedy in the above video that it saddens me deeply that the opportunity was wasted by whoever made that video.

It takes up a lot of space. It's definitely +EV if you're using that road to travel a long-ish distance. New cities do not seem to be designed in the same way as the Northeast, and I agree that jughandles wouldn't make sense there.

Re: SE FAQ, Liveblog and Holiday Discussion

All I know is whoever designed this marvelous stretch of highway (going east) in the suburbs outside New Orleans:

Needs to have hot acid poured in their eye sockets. On-ramps from both the left and right sides within a quarter mile of each other on a 3 lane highway 10 miles outside of a major city. Then it goes up to I think six or seven lanes like two miles later. It's impossibly dumb.

Re: SE FAQ, Liveblog and Holiday Discussion

I feel like traffic engineering is somewhere where the lay person is way more clueless than they realize, and the experts actually do know a lot more that we might give them credit for. You might think "boy this sucks it's terribly designed" but maybe it would suck even more than you could imagine without that design. (this partly based on conversations with a friend who worked for the DOT).

Also, if you want to make traffic suck less, do your part and don't follow so closely plz.

Also nobody in St. Louis coasted in the far left lane. When we moved to Texas we drove here and I distinctly remember not long after crossing the Texas border all the idiots were coasting in the left lane. My dad was furious, but he was right. Everyone here does this for some reason - it's infuriating. Even my wife (native Texan) does it and I can't get through to her how inconsiderate and unsafe it is.

Think about how dumb Arkansas hillbillies are and realize even they knew to drive in the right lane and pass in the left.
i've spent time in the northeast, mid-atlantic, west coast, and st. louis. st. louis is by far the worst of the bunch for pointless left lane clogging. sounds like texas is even worse, which isn't surprising and is one more reason i'll never go there.

actually following with minimal distance is ideal assuming you never cause an accident. If everyone followed less than a carlength behind the driver in front of them traffic would be a lot better. However, when people start slowing down or speeding up people suck at maintaining the same distance as the brake and accelerate at different rates. Doing both of those at an identical rate to the car in front of you while following super closely would be a lot better than following further behind.

There are hundreds and hundreds of videos on youtube of people getting extremely mad over left-lane bandits, and it is highly entertaining and frustrating.

following closely doesn't affect traffic at all unless you are saying that following closely leads to fender benders which leads to traffic back ups due to the accident/rubbernecking. But in my experience larger following distance would not have made a difference in bumper to bumper accidents, less distractions would.

Lincoln put in a new 3-lane roundabout by my house 2 months ago. And the general population's mind was utterly blown.

The D is so depressing but there seems to be a ton of young educated entrepreneurs getting good things rolling down there. The emptiness is chilling though, city is built for like 4 million people and has 700k living in it. Cool to listen to old people talk about when it was nice, would have been cool to see some of the beautiful buildings with windows

Maybe they're going to Dierbergs though. People definitely don't get the concept of the left lane. Traffic in St. Louis is pretty damn good, so at least there's that.
