Re: SE FAQ, Liveblog and Holiday Discussion

Pretty disturbing trend that is going on in my life right now, since were all sharing. Maybe this happens to everyone as they get older, but a ton of people seems to be having kids all the sudden. These individuals happen to be the type of people who shouldn't EVER be parents.

Also, D104 I thought you were from Philly? Maybe I just assumed that cuz you're an Eagles fan.
Born in Jersey, loved Randall Cunningham as a kid, that's how I got sucked in to the trainwreck that is being an Eagles fan.

Commuting is out. We want to live close to campus, preferably w/ 20 mins.

Cool. I'm 34 and we are looking to start a family, so +1 for Ann Arbor.

Neither Duke nor UNC are hiring this year, unfortunately.

The only ****ing reason I'm in this city is all our family lives here. If I was more of a jerk my wife and I would be living out in the hill country (probably SW of Austin somewhere).

Ann Arbor or Madison imo.

I would not choose East Lansing. Not much going on there, restaurants are meh.

Yeah EL is fun for about2-3 nights when I go home and has a handful of decent stuff, but it's just 75-80% of Ann Arbor in every way.

Re: SE FAQ, Liveblog and Holiday Discussion

yeah, basically people who goto college and are bright
1. don't have unprotected premarital sex
2. don't get married before the age of 25 because they want financial independence/success prior
3. are more picky when it comes to finding a suitable partner, which further decreases propensity to have kids before age 30.

dumb people do have unprotected premarital sex, aren't nearly as picky (at least the females aren't), and when they try to use birth control measures they often fail at it.

i see this has already been independently confirmed, but the biggest dickhead from my h.s. (just terrorized people, repeatedly smacking books out of people's hands until one time this nerd just drives his fist through guy's face and guy backs away saying, 'what the hell i was just playing!") drives by my house when i'm 23 and hooping with a couple friends...pulls in to say what's up, i ignore him for long enough for him to pull out but he doesn't so i go say hi.

he's got 3 kids and he wanted to know if he could call me to hang out sometime..haha.

d104, columbus may be great for you. lots of people love that place and there are tons of nearby suburbs and enclaves that are purely family residential.

i kinda hate columbus bc its congested and filled with strip malls.

Not that I disagree with you, and basically this is the movie Idiocracy, which is hilarious, but people who are smart shouldn't be the only ones who can breed. Those people would probably look at smart people and think "it's ridiculous that those heartless, greedy city-slicking bastards can have children".

The two aren't mutually exclusive but you know what I mean. Society doesn't value intelligence as much as we think (pretend) it does.

Re: SE FAQ, Liveblog and Holiday Discussion

You're right, phb (in part because what wealth and academic intelligence aren't nearly the most important things in determining someone's fitness for parenthood), but the kind of people to accidentally have kids / get married early because they believe they're supposed to tend to not be very self-reflective, which is why they do those things in the first place, and why they're not necessarily fit to be parents-- they won't put any more consideration into how to raise children than they did in the decision to have them, or into the other major decisions of their lives.

Re: SE FAQ, Liveblog and Holiday Discussion

In the past, intelligence was a trait that actually helped you to survive which is the reason it evolved. But in today's society, you don't have to be intelligent to survive and reproduce, and coupled with the fact that the dumber individuals seem to have a greater reproductive fitness (they're winning!) i can see the average intelligence of the human race decreasing over the centuries. At least until we come up with an effective and accessible way to genetically supplement our offspring which would artificially give human intelligence a boost.

Related, the female pelvic opening size was ldo highly selected for due to the fact that if they baby's head couldn't fit through there, you and your baby died. Now we have C-sections so that selective pressure is effectively removed and women's hips will be getting smaller over the centuries, and a "regular" birth will be almost unheard of in the future. (I think this is basically the case in some breeds of dogs too but im not sure.) Just a theory slash random musings that I just had

As someone with two kids I honestly have no idea how it is possible to responsibly parent three or more children.
