btw i can see a context in which yeota's story is funny because he's the butt of the joke there. he's not proud that he called asian girls lucy liu, he's recounting it as something stupid he did while drunk. what he's forgetting is that asian people face this sort of nonsense all the time from non-asian people and it has to be really annoying to them.

I actually think this is a substantially better comparison than most are giving it credit for, since after all the bulk of what dkgo does is make offensive posts. The bigotry is largely inferred by us, mostly because it's not executed very well (I'm imagining there are still some istewart fans around here that don't view him in the same light.) I don't think the casual references to rape would do very well in an environment with any women at all. I think the rape references and dkgo style posts betray a certain lack of sensitivity. The difference appears mainly to be that one is acceptable around here and one is not.

There was a thread a while ago after Kobe called somebody a f*ggot where a lot of this stuff came up. I think it's really difficult to discuss individuals negatively with any type of metaphor without making implications about the inferiority of some class of people. Some of these comparisons (racial, sexuality) are seen as uncontroversially negative around here. Some (the ******ed, comparing men to women) are seen as totally reasonable, and in fact viewing them as offensive marks you as a huge nit. Obviously there are differences in social context, but I do think some of these things are pretty arbitrary.

Yeah, this is pretty much true, but the rape battle isn't one that's going to be fought here. I also think that sports are one of the few arenas in which crassness is expected as a part of the discourse - while overt racism is mostly out of the stands, salty talk about players' masculinity, etc. is certainly not. But mostly I think we should all just calm ourselves a bit, and talk reasonably about what's the lowest level of men/boys' basketball team that would be favored over a WNBA team.

Agreed, but I think the point some people are trying to make is generally these comments aren't directed toward any member, and thus people shouldn't be offended. People laugh at racial jokes, so what's the difference? If you are not offended because one is funny and the other isn't, that's a massive double standard.

I see shots at religion all the time on this board, especially towards Christianity. Even clark's post neglected to mention he'd punish someone for making anti-Christian remarks, but he'd punish someone for antisemitic or anti-Muslim remarks. Personally, I don't care unless someone is directing it towards another person on this forum specifically.

But the modding needs to be more consistent. Either let all the comments go that aren't directed towards anyone on this forum or don't let any of the comments go. I don't mind if one forum is looser than another on their modding, but it needs to be consistent intra-forum. You can't punish people for making anti-Muslim remarks and be relaxed on anti-Christian remarks. I'm all for lolreligion assuming it isn't directed at any one specific person, but if you are going to punish someone or something, please be consistent.

dkgo wasn't the only person making racial remarks in that week 4 gameday thread. I understand he made the most remarks, but he was probably the only one actually punished. So the message I'm currently getting is "Some racism is ok. Too much, and you'll be banned"

Assuming this is a genuine opinion and not some sort of level - I agree, but I don't think it's a fight we're going to win. Plus, shouting rude stuff is cathartic.

lol, what? Muslims and Jews are actual persecuted groups, Christians (as a whole) aren't. Also, feel free to $how your work here in terms of actual posts that demonstrate the supposed double standard.

Haha, no way a crappy p0ster should get exactly the same amount of rope as a good p0ster. Besides, doing it your way rewards snitching.

That's the problem. It shouldn't matter. Calling someone a fig vs. calling some a ginger should be on the same level. You are discriminating based on a physical feature. Sure, one group has been discriminated more than another, but the ginger hater could be far more hateful in their intent, and they'll be called out far later than a racist would be.

Also, a good example of where Christianity gets laughed at is the Facebook thread in OOT. Pretty much every religious status posted in there is of God, and you can find plenty of "lolreligion" type comments. Now, I'm not really sure how this is treated in SE because religion rarely gets brought up, but I'd imagine there were some anti-religious statements during "Tebow Time".

I personally don't care. Yeah, good poasters should get some leeway. Maybe SE is doing a really good job, and the rest of the forum is doing a poor job with their consistency, that I'm extrapolating their results into SE.

I think what was lost in yeota's post was that he was trying to say (albeit, he did a terrible job and his example was awful) that in both instances he was basing his comments based on someone's appearance. Of course, the Gerard Butler comparison would be a compliment, so that is why it was a terrible example. Calling someone a ginger is only becoming less acceptable because a large number of people have used it in a derogatory manner.

But really, none of this matters because most of it isn't going to be the popular opinion. People aren't going to view discriminators of a non-persecuted group worse than ones of a persecuted group. The main thing is I have no problem with dkgo's racism remarks or people making remarks of rape and what not until it is trying to be derogatory towards another member. People getting offended over remarks that aren't directed towards them is ridiculous and what is making a lot of people and countries soft today.
