I think the issue is just that country hams probably shouldn't be eaten as chunks of meat. Most of the famous hams (prosciutto, serrano, etc.) are served uncooked and really thinly sliced for a reason.
Spiral hams were definitely common in my house around holidays growing up, they made great leftover sandwich fare.
