Dids,
Is the free EP the one with Pussy and Patron? If you think Kendrick Lamar EP is boring because it has too many songs that sound alike, that is not a concern with GKMC. If you are unsure if will "like" his music based on what you heard on the EP, i'd recommend listening to some of the hits of Section.80 (or just the whole thing) and some singles/b-sides that have been released. Songs like Hiiiiipower, ADHD, The Recipe, Westside Right on Time, Ronald Reagan Era, Tammy's Song, etc.

You're seeing a 'fringe' culture get assumed by the mainstream for the first time in your life - this is probably the first time you saw it form, then saw it slide into TV commercials, and finally on to SNL. Dudes in newly popular bands often have to have a look that says 'I'm in a band', and those guys have it.

Yeah- that's the EP. (assuming that's P&P with Ab Soul) I should probably give it another listen. I only mentioned Billy Woods as another recent album that a lot of people love that I didn't enjoy.

But then I'm starting to think that Aesop Rock's Skelethon might by my favorite album ever, so I may have just vanished so far up white nerd rap's ass that I'm hopeless. (that album really is incredible though)

Free tip: If they're too terrible/mainstream to even get reviewed by pitchfork, they're a 0/10 on the hipster scale.

got home from the flaming lips (ungodly numbers of hipster attendees) and gf reminded me that we should check the powerball ticket we bought on a whim on Friday afternoon. boom, $100. got the barest hint of what jackpot winners must feel checking the ticket, checking the site, looking back and forth and back and forth before it sinks in.

Flaming lips are pretty incredible live. It's a life goal of mine to run on top of people in a huge inflatable ball like their singer does

Flaming lips were a mediocre hipster band in 1995. It seems impossible they could still be a hipster favorite, as being good enough to still tour, while never being good enough to be really successful, for 17+ years, seems really hard.

Cult following, plus post-1995 success you seem to have overlooked, namely Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots and Soft Bulletin

And the whole being famous for the shows themselves thing as already demonstrated above

Do you realize, that your avatar has the most masculine face?

Not sure what level you're on, but I was just making a lame Flaming Lips reference. I Hope, though nothing will top the Pujols moon shot avatar.

I'd be ecstatic to be as "not good enough to be really successful" as the Soft Bulletin-Yoshimi Flaming Lips.

Inflatable ball crowdsurfing was so awesome and is now something I, as well, want to do in life.

Hipsterism came mainly from the fact that it was some Student Board of the University of Arkansas that brought them to town. Since students could get free tickets the mixture was approximately 49% stoners, 49% hipsters, 2% old people like my gf and me. If everyone had to purchase tickets for cash, I'm sure the crowd make-up would have differed greatly.

My only gripe, is that the show peaked in the first five minutes with the running in the inflatable ball, the giant balloons, shooting confetti and **** off into the crowd. The rest was good, but it was never as good as that part.

Also, if anyone knows why the guitar he uses during Yoshimi has the giant plastic dome around the part where he strums the strings I would appreciate knowing.

Sorry, didn't get the reference.

I mean, I guess it's all what you define as really successful. I guess like, if I was in the band I'd think that it was really successful. But big picture, they were clearly not successful enough to break into the mainstream for more than a few moments.

been to a couple flaming lips shows years ago and there were solid numbers of older people there each time. mostly pretty odd and prob not very similar to your average 2p2'er.

one of them was probably one of their GOAT live shows. had a repeat of the show just recently to remember it's awesomeness.

haven't listened to them in a few years though. clouds taste metallic is really underrated though in addition to the obviously good ones.

Clark: that's timing and music type rather than skill though. How many indie bands from '93 to '05 that aren't named Radiohead truly "broke into the mainstream for more than a few moments?" You're holding your indie bands to too high of a standard of success iyam.

I'd rather be Pavement/NMH/the Lips than Creed, despite their relative impacts in the mainstream.

And so, the whole discussion regarding the lips comes full circle with a perfectly crafted hipster response.
