Random question: On a per-capita basis, is there a less athletic country than India? And yes I realize their most popular sport gets exactly zero coverage by the American media (cricket).

bangladesh/pakistan?

I mean yeah, that whole subcontinent has problems with it, I think the most logical reason I've seen is poor nutrition in children is rampant with little/no government sport programs leading to no reason to become devoted to sport.

My indian pal and I were discussing this exactly. His thesis was that it is a cultural thing - education is just amazingly important, with everyone of any means wanting their kids to be doctors or engineers. So most kids end up in after school lessons, instead of sports. Any one too poor to aspire to that, isnt in any shape to aspire to be a sports star.

doesn't help that the whole country is a cesspool of poverty, disease, and borderline slavery with almost no infrastructure at all

that being said I've worked with two Ph.d's from India that were both really smart
