when it was first released, i ran into links pretty often. it became "trendy" for a legion of trolls on one video game board i posted on to embed the link into other, innocent looking links. some people were just genuinely posting it, with others noting "it's tough to watch, but everyone should see this to see what we are dealing with." (remember, this was during a bit of patriotic surge and widespread support for the "war on terror"). how would a 10yo just posting about asheron's call interpret that?

when i modded the board, it was a big issue. the url to the main site it was on was eventually added to a link filter, but they found ways around that.

i dont want to post a link to the site here, but it started with an "o" and ended with an "ish." it used to host and spread a lot of horrific things. i have no idea if it still exists.

I remember being a kid on the internet-- I was a slightly early adopter, a fwe years before it became mainstream-- and if I saw anything like that, it was because I wanted to. The internet is certainly more widespread now than it was then, but I think you can, you know, sit around and freak out about what your kids might be doing, or you can try to instill your values in them and trust that they're good kids who'll do the right thing. (Which is basically true of any fundamental approach to parenting.) I mean, kids who want to find that stuff are going to find it no matter what you do; you can put certain restrictions in place, and you can talk to your kids if they do find those things, but I mean... you know, I think you'd just go crazy if you sat around worrying about everything your kid might possibly get into (I actually understand that this is the large majority of what being a parent is like).
