It's one thing to get annoyed by someone posting a spoiler. It's a whole other thing to get annoyed at someone avoiding posting a spoiler. It's like getting mad at someone for being polite.

Spoiler:
Quote:
One of the running motifs in the series is the way the system chews people up and spits them out. Be it the streets, the police department, or city hall, your merits as an individual have little to do with your fate-- only luck, the workings of the system, and your ability to survive in it. The police department and city hall are filled with people like Burrell and Carcetti because their top priority is their career ambition and doing whatever it takes to further that. Doing their job well, doing the right thing, or even being a generally decent person all falls by the wayside of surviving and climbing the ladder.

Spoiler:
I don't know if you can draw a comparison between Carcetti and Burrell as both having their top priority as career advancement. I like to think that Carcetti actually thought that he could make a difference as mayor and then parlay that into Governor. Though he had his missteps morally in the beginning- i.e. banging the blonde in the bathroom- he thought he make a real difference in his city and be more than a dirty careless politician like Royce. It was only when the budget shortfalls destroyed his agenda- which lead to no hope of a difference being made in the schools and crime- he said **** it I'm going for the glory. That is the system chewing you up and spitting you out.

Did Burrell begin his career like Carcetti and the morality fell by the wayside because of career advancement? Maybe, but I think that Carcetti, Dookie, Randy are products of a parasitic system while Burrell, Royce, and Clay Davis are the parasites.

lost is what happens when you try to end every episode for a couple seasons with a cliffhanger mystery then realize "wait how the **** are we going to answer all these questions we posed"

Spoiler:
bodie dying was luck too. wrong dude watched him walk out the police station at the wrong time. they didnt know anything about wat he was doing there. him being about to snitch was completely incidental.
the entire series was wrong place wrong time parlayed into seasons at a time

i guess i'll do spoilers since errbody mad

Spoiler:
season 1: d'angelo doesn't shoot the guy that gets errbody mad mcnulty doesn't talk to the judge when d'angelo doesn't beat the case, first detail isn't made, supply doesn't abandon the barksdales cuz they assume avon made a deal, stringer isn't forced to deal with joe, avon isn't forced to get mouzone, stringer isn't forced to setup mouzone, mouzone/omar don't kill stringer

season 2: sobotka doesn't take the window in the nave valchek isn't up his ass about it. detail isn't made. d'angelo doesn't shoot the guy, mcnulty isn't on the boats, mcnulty isn't off the boats and the 14 jane does don't get ****ed into homicide out of spite

season 3: detail doesn't raid when they do in the finale marlo's dead. prez doesn't go out to pickup chinese food with mcnulty he doesn't kill the black cop, LIKELY doesn't leave policing to be a teacher

season 4: herc doesn't lose the camera he doesn't need to interrogate randy/little kevin. herc doesn't interrogate little kevin he doesn't let slip that randy snitched. and of course monk isn't at the exact place to see the exact moment bodie is riding with mcnulty, bodie's alive and marlo's in prison

shaft,

Spoiler:
The reason for the budget shortfall is that Carcetti won't take the state money for education. He doesn't do that because he doesn't want to be seen being bailed out by a Republican governor, when he has intentions to run against that very same governor for his office in a couple of years.

It's a move that first and foremost is about his career. It's the same with running for mayor-- he knows he's not ready for the job, but the window of opportunity, with Gray siphoning some of the black vote from Royce, is there now, and won't be in four years.

Carcetti might have first dreamed up the idea to run for mayor because he wanted to make a difference, but even early on we can see him playing politics with Burrell and Valchek to boost his profile, and him ****ing the blonde is a perfect example of the narcissism that leads to this career ambition-- he's watching HIMSELF in the mirror, he's clearly more in love with himself than anything else, and that's why he chooses to run, it's ego gratification.

That's the unfortunate reality of politics-- the people who ascend through the ranks are the ones who play these games, but the only people who play these games are ultimately the ones who care about career advancement more than doing the right thing.
