I don't really watch TV other than sporting events, so you're not alone. I'm really starting to look forward to watching this tho.

Re: SE FAQ, Liveblog and Forum Discussion

I highly recommend reading this recap article after each episode. Does a good job of going over things that could be easily missed w/o really spoiling future episodes/plotlines. Since The Wire is one of those shows that does no hand-holding/spoon-feeding it can be pretty jarring and a bit difficult to keep up for the first few episodes til u "learn" how to watch it. Even then there's so much depth/nuance that you're guaranteed to miss things. I read the recap immediately after watching and it helped me process a lot more of whats going on (especially for keeping track of characters and the whole hierarchy/chain of command etc, which can be pretty overwhelming at first).

Theres a newbie version for first timers and a veterans version for people who've already watched before.

Link to noob version, s1e1 (you can find the rest from there obv): http://sepinwall.blogspot.com/2008/0...t-newbies.html

And yeah all this Wire talk definitely has me about to start another go round.

A cursory look at that blog entry made me jizz my pants. After the refractory period, I'll def check out the Breaking Bad stuff.

Anyone who lives within shouting distance of New York City that doesn't go see the Stanley Clarke Trio at the Blue Note before Sunday night deserves to get hit with a subway full of SuperAIDS aka the New York Mets

i dont watch TV. havent had cable for years. i go out to sports bars pretty often with friends to watch any big games or i can get the games online. only tough thing is NFL games (altho they can be "found" online, the quality isnt good), but i found a few giants bars with a good regular crowd.

Re: SE FAQ, Liveblog and Forum Discussion

it's amazing the amount of money i've saved not having cable. so much programming and TV is available online (legally too) in great quality. the 360's integration with on-demand TV, movies and even sports (MLB.TV can be streamed direct to TV now thru xbox live) is also great and very cheap.

that said all i really watch is sports. i havent followed a TV series since 24 ended. when im visiting my parents i watch survivor and all that crap with them but i wouldnt go out of my way to watch it every week.

Re: SE FAQ, Liveblog and Forum Discussion

Haven't got cable since I moved into my new place, just easier to stream everything imo. I just started watching The Wire for example, and finding DVD quality streams is obv easy (the show is a decade old) but even most new shows are out in high quality the same day they're broadcast.

Edit: Using an HDMI output from my laptop to my big-screen is the only reason I'd go this route though, not sure I could handle only using the laptop.

Re: SE FAQ, Liveblog and Forum Discussion

ya if you torrent then you can get anything, although in a few months a bunch of ISPs are rolling out a pretty big anti-piracy program IIRC

Re: SE FAQ, Liveblog and Forum Discussion

The thing is, if all the shows that i watch were available legally a la carte for a fee via dl or stream, I wouldn't have to torrent at all. But it's just the most convenient solution out there, and it puts on demand to shame.

Re: SE FAQ, Liveblog and Forum Discussion

Pretty much. I have no problem paying for reasonable access to media. The mainstream companies no longer control distribution as evidenced by torrents. They can ***** all they want about the lowered margins they'll have to accept if they move to such a model, but it won't change reality: Media companies don't get to choose whether or not I will consume their products/services. They only get to choose whether or not they'll get paid for it.

ETA: Now, that doesn't make copyright infringement morally right; I'm not suggesting that. I'm just saying that thumbing your nose at reality and being a huge ***** about it won't actually solve anything.

Re: SE FAQ, Liveblog and Forum Discussion

Gabe Newell sums it up well:

"We think there is a fundamental misconception about piracy. Piracy is almost always a service problem and not a pricing problem," he said. "If a pirate offers a product anywhere in the world, 24 x 7, purchasable from the convenience of your personal computer, and the legal provider says the product is region-locked, will come to your country 3 months after the US release, and can only be purchased at a brick and mortar store, then the pirate's service is more valuable."

Steam's delivery method, despite piracy, has been very effective:

"Prior to entering the Russian market, we were told that Russia was a waste of time because everyone would pirate our products. Russia is now about to become [Steam's] largest market in Europe," Newell said.

i don't really see the moral difference between torrenting a tv show and using a dvr to fast forward through commercials but i'm sure someone will tell me i'm wrong

phildo,
The main difference is you can archive as many torrented tv shows as you want.
