the incentive to make an account, at least when i did, was that the board defaulted to threaded mode which was incredibly tilting. i think i started lurking in april 2004 but finally gave in because switching every thread to flat mode was a pain.

FWIW a lot of people thought I was a gimmick when I started posting here.

After 2 days you've seen the same 5 SE-isms over and over again and it's not that hard to figure out what they mean with a lil searching.

LDO had an entry in urban dictionary so I figured out that one in like 3 seconds with a google search. This stuff might hint at a gimmick but it's not like you need a 3 month crash course to figure out how to blend in.

edit- same thing happened when I first started playing werewolf because I had skimmed another game in enough detail to figure out the meaning of words like "villa" and "wagon". You only need to see a forum meme used once to be able to incorporate it into your own posting.
