The smart money is taking the latter option.

I think you're confusing learning with doing work. Pretty much everyone involved either already knew or learned the material anyways. The same people that refused to do the work took the AP tests and, more or less, made 4s or 5s across the board in every class the school offered (highest percentage of 4s and 5s in the state). It was basically all done for the thrill of seeing how much we could get away with (hence the immature part I cited) rather than to avoid learning.
edit: and yes it was worth missing a golf match when the alternative was missing it anyways because she required everyone meet with her if they wanted to rewrite the 15 page paper for a higher grade. Given that I had her in the last period of the day and her only available timeslots were after school on the day of the first match I was going to miss it if I met with her anyways. When I proposed meeting a different day, at lunch, or in the morning she said she didn't have time then and told me that if I didn't rewrite it then I would get an F (she failed all but 3 kids in 4 AP classes and those 3 all got Cs or Ds). I basically said **** that and told her I'd keep my 45 or whatever she gave me. She then told me that I didn't want to do that and threatened to call my mom. She did the same to a friend who played soccer and he took the same stand. When word of that spread the next day about half the class said **** it and never turned in new papers. She talked to the golf coach after this and he held me out of the match. The soccer coach didn't do the same to my friend though.
