id like to point out brave new world, which i enjoyed, is not a clear dismissal of communism.

This chemical engineer dude and I have a few friends in common and he knows I have a lit background and last week he emailed me out of the blue and asked in a 100% non-trolling way about books; his questions basically boiled down to "what makes great art great?" and "what makes lousy art lousy?" and "are protactors made out of clear plastic because that way it's easier to read Hamlet through them?"

He's a really good guy and (also like a lot of my family) an exclusively left-brain dude, if he had a slogan it would be "UTILITY!" and yeah, what I should have done was write him a three-sentence response back about how those are some genuinely good and important questions and how they're also kind of unanswerable, at least in alphabet.

But naaaaaaaaah, I went the other way and spent the next five hours writing him an 8000 word reply. And it honestly was 8000 words, and I'm sure he'll (correctly) ignore most of it. And that's fine, bc you pick your spots, and it was good for me to think about that stuff for a few hours--but still I'm def not going to **** up the FAQ thread even more than I already do by writing posts that are too long.

Imo part of the problem with this conversation is that "reading" is too broad a word; passive reading and active reading are like two totally different sports and there's a place for each. Same thing with "Film Watching" and "Painting Looking" and "A Million Other Things." But when people who only are equipped to watch/read something passively are exposed to something that can only successfully be watched actively then it's no wonder that they think it sucks. It's not because they're dumb, it's obviously not that, it's because active reading is for the most part a learned skill, that they've basically never been taught, maybe bc they're not really interested in learning it, which is fine. The world is big and round.

But this kind of split happens over and over and over again on 2p2 and nobody ever understands each other and it's prob doomed to stay that way, mostly bc of the nature of poker. But for all non-readers, trust me, the literary devices that we sometimes like to talk about are not a bunch of made-up phony conspiratorial conceits agreed upon by some academic cabal in the basement of castle wolfenstein that is hellbent on making everybody who isn't a star-bellied sneetch feel like a philistine. They're just stuff we learned to spot that helps us figure out wtf a writer is thinking and why the story might actually be really interesting. Sorry, mini-rant over, I'll post shorter.

Being made to scrutinise 'The Eiffel Tower (and other mythologies)' by Roland Barthes as part of my degree irrevocably destroyed my literary life.

edit: i tried to transcribe an excerpt but got too angry and had to stop

Man, no RAIDS in the forum is an absolutely awesome breath of fresh air.

The movies/books thing is silly. There are many examples of movies being better than their counterparts.

I am seeing Drive at forty eight. I loved that movie and have no desire to ever touch the book. List looks solid.

Forrest Gump is on that list and I can confirm the movie is better. The book is much, much different and the movie isn't really a retelling of the book. Also, the signature line "Life is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you're gonna get" is not from the book. The line in the book is "being an idiot is no box of chocolates."

To bring it somewhat sports-related, The Natural is also always on the canonical list of movies being better than the books. I've never read the book, but I heard it sucks.

In general this is true. Non-fiction or short stories (less than 30 min to read) are solid and worth it because you can gain some knowledge or get quick entertainment. Fiction pretty much sucks though.

This is the only, but quite notable, exception. Harry Potter is hypermegaelite and anyone that says otherwise has some lol tastes in literature as they are without a doubt the best 7 books ever written.

On another note, I dominated accelerate reader until 2nd grade at which point I had read all the non-fiction books in the library. I then dominated it again in 4th grade, 5th grade, and 6th grade as I changed schools each year and found new non-fiction books. Once I ran out of those the reading dominance and vocabulary decreased and is still decreasing to this day.

Thoughts?

encyclopedia brown books were elite. nothing felt better than solving the mystery, even though i normally got impatient and looked for the answer after 30 seconds of thinking about it.

i wasn't allowed to read goosebumps as a kid. not sure why. i think my mom just deemed them to be stupid.

The Princess Bride has to be the easiest book-to-movie transition of all time. The movie changed and shortened the backstory, with the grandpa reading it instead of the narrator rewriting it for his son, and dropped what would have been a pretty excellent action sequence. Otherwise it's exactly the same, down to the dialogue. Tough to say if the book or movie is better given that. I enjoyed the narrator talking about what got cut out and the dungeon scene not in the movie is pretty great, so I'd still say the book is better. It's my favorite movie, though.

Encyclopedia Brown was great, but I remember some of them being solved based on pretty flimsy evidence. That's probably a sign that I got too old for them.

I somehow recall that he cracked one case by figuring out that a guy was right handed because the sideburns on the right side of his face were shorter than the left. Apparently it's impossible for someone to trim the sideburns shorter on the opposite side of their face from the hand they shave with because they have to reach up and around their face and can't reach.
