I don't know what Veronica Mars is, but funding for a movie of it on Kickstarter has hit over $2.4 million in like 16 hours

The new pope is "known for caring for AIDS patients and for preparing his own meals"

..whhhhhhhat? If preparing your own meals is a trait worthy of popehood then you all can start kissing my feet right now

Checked off the Indian box last night. Hairier than I would have liked, and generations of vegetarianism does not do wonders for one's body composition. Still, cute, slender, and reactive. Would bang again.

This guy is pretty confidant everyone under the age of like 50 will be able to live pretty much indefinitely. The basic idea (he calls it Longevity Escape Velocity) being that by the time the current 50 year olds reach 80 or whatever we will be able to make 80 year olds live to 120 and in that 40 years we will learn how to make 120 year olds live to 180 and so on.

Edit: Here's a more in depth lecture where he goes further into the biology. Well worth a watch if you have a spare hour.

Yep, this seems like a very strong reason for skepticism in and of itself. Plus there's always way bigger gaps between developing a theoretically practicable method of e.g. repairing defective cells and actually getting widespread workable technology.

Nevertheless, pisses me off immensely that governments are still mostly about dickwaving nonsense when they could be investing huge sums in science and technology and actually bettering humanity. ****ing lol at the risk calculations that rank terrorism as a huge, immediate, pressing threat and completely ignore global warming.

We know terrorism exists. You can't prove global warming exists.

lol wat

We didn't even know what DNA was until about 50 years ago. Now we have the entire genome sequenced.

That japanese dude just got the nobel prize for inducing pluripotency in differentiated cells. As long as science is properly funded, it shouldn't be difficult to culture human tissues by the end of the century.

i think de grey is maybe a tad bit too optimistic about the timeframe but yeah science is advancing so rapidly that i find it really hard to believe that people won't be essentially immortal in 1000 or 10,000 years or whatever.

The obvious issue is avoiding existential disaster before then, which is far from a lock in the next 100 years let alone the next 1000 or 10k.
