No way. I guess if you view it as a 'final' season it disappoints some viewers, but most fans know it wasn't supposed to be.

The Hearst introduction brings such a great dynamic and makes Al an even more compelling lead.

Show is fully realized and at peak in episodes like 'I Am Not The Man You Take Me For' and fire fully brought in episode like 'Two Headed Beast'

Think Milch got the most out of everyone, but really we just saw the best and most effective Swearegnen, which was the primary motor for the show anyway

EDIT: Guess I was wrong about Deadwood finale. Guess everyone was wrong at the time though. Even Sepinwall admits he thought Milch didn't know it was the finale. Interesting.

I am not disappointed that the show doesn't 'end' properly - and while Milch might've known he was writing the series finale, that doesn't mean he knew he was writing the final season. So there's some things that happen that never pay off (Brian Cox's character and his troupe coming to mind). And there's some characters who just kind of are around and don't really do much.

I just re-watched Deadwood and I go 2>1>>3. 3 is still really good, though, and I'll admit the writing continued to get more interesting as the show went along. Still, the plotting sometimes suffered.

You're right that the direction of the season matters more than an episode.

I wonder how many episodes he wrote knowing the show was ending. Just the finale?
