All in the Family is a must-watch, but it may be lost on more post-South Park generations.

The episodes from 1971 through 1975-76 were unique and had huge shock value as recently as the late-90s. Elite class, IMO.

And they had a lot of time left. The wife didn't want to play that type of woman anymore and Carroll O'Connor didn't want the character to go from being a parody of men like that to an icon for men like that to admire, so the show stopped.

Ya, this.

I mean, I've known people who didn't like the Simpsons and I've known people who didn't like Seinfeld. I didn't think it was even possible to hate both. I'm dying to know what sort of entertainment makes such a person laugh.

CDLs favorite comedy is probably the second half of Wedding Crashers

Even the episodes from back when it was still good? Why? I loved Simpsons when I was under 20.

I know there are far worse shows than BBT, but none that rustle my jimmies worse. For the love of god people, just because it is about smart people, does not make it a smart comedy.

Sorry, I meant people currently under the age of 20. They would have been too young when the show was at the peak.

I could see how the only people who really like The Simpsons were born between the late-60s and the late-80s because they're desensitized to the style, which has progressed on top of what they laid out. Kinda' like my All in the Family example of those being born in the late-40s through the early-80s. Shock value is huge in comedy and that's relative to the times.

Plenty under 20 certainly hate Seinfeld. They don't get it. A lot of the funny inconveniences in the show nuances in social interaction are minimized have now been solved or able to be avoided by technology. What were once dramatic interruptions in relationships with friends, family, and in dating end exponentially faster these days to go from conflict to simple misunderstandings.

I can't laugh at any "cbs comedies", it probably has to do with going to so many tapings of them.

used wiki and did a cursory look to speed the process up, but this is what I came up with for what I've liked dating back to 1995:

shows: boy meets world, entourage, fresh prince, full house, john stewart, pretty much all the late shows, jersey shore (wow, programmed comedy is a thin genre)

movies: the home alones, billy madison, happy gilmore, space jam, austin powers 1 and 2, men in black, the rush hour series, the waterboy, the toy stories, me myself and irene, meet the parents, the replacements, super troopers, bad santa, bruce almighty, anchorman, dodgeball, oceans 11, 12, and 13, hitch, wedding crashers, borat, talledega nights, superbad, step brothers, forgetting sarah marshall, the hangover

movies that are notably not funny: office space, zoolander, napoleon dynamite, tropic thunder, pineapple express, scott pilgrim vs. the world, the hangover 2, hall pass, horrible bosses

it wasn't a value judgment. do i think i'd get along with a person who doesn't like either the simpsons or seinfeld, but was fully immersed in 90s/00s television culture? no, i don't, but that has nothing to do with you, really.

Commenting on the quirks of the list, not (specifically) judging taste. Just seems really random, personal preferences though of course.

How many people like all those goofy comedies he likes (Sandlers, Super Troopers, Ferrells, Dodgeball, Borat, etc.) and then also consider Zoolander and Office Space "notably not funny" and The Simpsons and Seinfeld "awful"? I find it hard to believe that it's all that many.

CDL: out of all the ****ty comedies in the last however many years, what made you pick Hall Pass as one of those 9 notably unfunny ones? Just curious. I had to google it to remember what it was.

Seinfeld operates on a much different level than Sandler films, fwiw.

I do think comedy films in general have tons to do with circumstance whether or not one finds them funny. I saw Dodgeball with a group who were mostly not sober and watched Zoolander w/ a friend who didn't really find it funny, and came away thinking Dodgeball > Zoolander, but it easily could've been the reverse had the situations been flipped.
