It would be less creepy if they weren't singing about how great America is. They would have 20 more classmates in any other first-world country. Have them sing (almost) anything else and it becomes far more tolerable instantly.

Yeah I guess we just see different symbolism in the gesture. It's not like they're singing "God Bless the NRA."

Agreed.

Also, Party Down could have been an all time great if not canceled.

Guess I just see guns/America as too symbolically intertwined. Fair enough, though.

Still probably one of the top 10 best (as opposed to greatest) comedies of all time, I think. S1 such a ridiculous peak.

WOAT comedy of all time: The Big Bang Theory. Did you guys know it had an 8.6 on IMDB? Not that it matters, but damn. That's a lot of bad taste.

It doesn't really feel like a show that fits my taste but was considering giving it a chance considering the huge and increased popularity over the years.

Speaking of comedies, finally got round to seeing Silver Linings Playbook last night.

Pretty disappointed overall. Promising at first and some really good performances in difficult roles but lacking in interesting content. Plus not quite sure why it descended into a slapstick nature.

Jennifer Lawrence didn't disappoint though so worth it for that.

Spoiler:
Definitely deserved better than an average score of 5.0 for that dance

I went to fifth grade with Jennifer Lawrence. Haven't seen any of her movies. Just figured I'd weigh in.

It's a show written about nerds/smart people (which, of course, it 100% conflates) by people who are neither nerds nor smart. It's a Chuck Lorre/CBS/Middle America/multicamera/laughtrack piece of **** that also manages to have the worst characters, by far, on TV.

It rustles my jimmies.

It's at the cheap $5 theater this weekend, so may give it a whirl on Saturday.

Everyone's free to hate BBT but I enjoy it. I watch almost no fictional TV but I enjoy it. The first time I saw it I started cracking up at the obnoxious laugh track but I guess I got used to it. I think it's a good thing that they made a show about nerds but somehow digestible for the average person.

My wife teaches math and we were quizzing my 9 year old nephew about math after he was bragging about how good he was. She started explaining something to him and he just goes "Now you just sound like Sheldon" totally deadpanned. I ****ing lost it.

BBT is just kinda' meh. Would never make the time to watch it live, wouldn't waste DVR space on it, but enjoy watching reruns when nothing else is on.

My DVR real estate is pretty cheap. Like I said I don't really watch fictional TV, so it's largely composed of Jeopardy!, PGA tour events, NFL games which are waning out, and then old movies from the 90s that I come across that I've seen 40 times.

From Das Boot's brief review, I can surmise it's the kind of show that will also rustle my jimmies.

I'll give Party Down a shot.

Any other good recommendations for TV comedy?

I'm pretty particular about comedies in general. I mentioned ITT not long ago, 'Garth Marenghi's Darkplace' that I recently discovered. Now that is elite British comedy.

BBT is awful.

It is branded as "nerd humor" so people who watch it think they're watching smarter comedy, but really the show is just a bunch of people yelling "NEEEERRRRRDDDDDDDD" at the characters over and over. Rather than making clever jokes in the arena of nerdiness, the "punch line" is always that they do nerdy things.

BBT basically exists as a way to make fun of nerds. Adding to that the fact that the most well-known character is treated basically as a walking punch line for Asperger's, just adds another layer of awfulness on the steaming ****pile that is that show.

Here's our current DVR:

Me: Euro Golf Tour, PGA Tour, Jeopardy!, Hardcore Pawn (lol - I used to watch this - need to stop series recording), Joe Schmo show (since it was recommended itt), Betty White's Off Their Rockers (lol), Saturday Night Live, National Lampoon's Vacation

Wife: Big Bang Theory, Vampire Diaries. I know she series records a lot of fictional shows but I guess she's caught up on them and has deleted them. I know she also watches Fringe and Bones, and shows like that.

Yeah there aren't enough Asian jokes in BBT. You just made me realize that. Unless you consider Raj asian.

I have same feelings on HIMYM and BBT. Futurama is great though. There's some actual nerd humor.

Darkplace was awesome, just got stoned and watched the episodes on Youtube over the course of a couple days. Richard Ayoade is great.

What all have you watched? The top tier of recentish American comedy is something like: Flight of the Conchords, Eastbound and Down, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Party Down, It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia (cable and far from comprehensive); Arrested Development, Parks/Recreation, Freaks and Geeks, s1-3 of American Office, Community, whatever the good seasons of 30 Rock are (network).

Futurama pre-cancellation was really, really good. Funny, well-written, capable of true moments of poignancy. It hasn't done much for me since its return, but I can see a certain appeal still there.
