Yeah, to me, this is the difference between ****ty whiny music and something like The Smiths. There are a bunch of bands who can whine and write straightforward lyrics backed by three chords with no subtext or subtlety whatsoever. Boo-hoo, you girlfriend dumped you, happens to everyone, you're not special, deal with it.

But take the Smiths, for example: People call The Smiths "depressing music" because Morrissey is incredible at tapping into those feelings: of high-school age loneliness and isolation, of being a fey outcast who just wants to belog, of not having control yet over your own life, just waiting for something good to come. Even though I've never been someone quite like Morrissey, I can still relate to that stuff. And even that I'm older, I still listen to The Smiths from time to time because he's just so damn good at expressing that. Even though it's "depressing", it's not just whining about your own bull****; it's great music that poetically taps into feelings everyone has felt.

I enjoyed it more than anything that had come before, but not nearly as much as everything since.

I think the "omg high school was terrible, I was a complete outcast loser" is just a lazy trope that people see on TV. I'd guess for most people high school was a place where some of the best things that ever happened to them took place as well as some of the worst.

i guess i like the smiths but a lot less than I did when I was in HS. Some songs just have great melodies and rhythms. Some are real turds that are lulzy looking back on.

nothing bad happened to me in HS. I was comfortably in the middle and got along with most folks.

SE FAQ's thoughts on Incubus?

One of my 5 favorite bands OAT, but I feel like they don't get as much love from most other people.

This strategy sounds about as shaky as Michael J. Fox surfing the Japan tsunami after sitting in a Starbucks all morning drinking coffee and watching old clips of Family Ties on his wifi while each 17 year old girls came up and said "Hey Scottie! Scottie Baio! My mom loved you on that show Mr. Belvedere!" Now I don't want to get off on a rant here but in lieu of taking this advice I think I'll get on a 3-way conference call with Nic Cage and MC Hammer's tax accountants. Seriously folks. I'll make about as much money betting hockey as an armless door-to-door calligraphy-service salesman with bad teeth and exorbitant prices. C'mon man, John Daly thinks this is degenerative behavior. I've seen elephants on safari in Chad that don't crap this big. Please take me off your mailing list, mkay babe? I no longer wish to subscribe to your quackjob newsletter. Now I don't have anything against the far left but I personally subscribe to the theory that I make my own bread and eat it. It would be more hypocritical of me than Lance Armstrong cycling by you with a coupla syringes hanging out of his Cheryl-Crow-bedding, Matt McConoughey-knowing veins, yelling "Hey buddy! I'm clean!" to pretend I can give that bread away and let the government figure out how to feed me.

I think they kind of get an unfair rap for just being gay ass depressing music. Take something like "Stop Me if You Think That You've Heard This One Before." Getting drunk, lying to your gf about where you were and then making her feel bad about questioning you all told in a hilarious way.

Yeah some of the lyrics are just too much. Marr is the GOAT though.

the problem with the smiths, at least with the circles i ran with back in the day (hardcore kids, hipsters, etc), is that it glorified depression and got everyone thinking they're some special snowflake and it's just like stfu ****.
