Favorite 90s album not yet mentioned ITT: Depeche Mode - Violator

60s is actually the worst decade for music imo. I would probably rank it reverse chronological, maybe switching the 90s and 2000s.

Im with schu that bone machine is amazing. Pixies show here ~18 months ago sold out in 2 min so they added another date day before and played Bone Machine the other show as an encore. blah.

Really like The Flaming Lips but have missed them twice. One time I had the flu and the other time was when I went to TO to see Radiohead this Summer, the stage collapsed and the Lips had a free show outside a 1 min walk from our hotel. We were just all mad and decided to get realllllly drunk instead tho.

I always think Sympathy for the Devil is my favorite Stones song but then I'm usually a little underwhelmed at the end. Maybe if it was recorded with modern technology it would live up to the promise it shows in the beginning and the freak out parts wouldn't be so cheesy.

Radiohead has a distinct sound/ethos, and alternative rock is a really diverse genre, so I don't think the bolded is bizarre. Even if Radiohead were an aesthetic composite of everything '90s Alternative Rock, taste/preference is nuanced enough that loving a genre hardly entails loving every band classed within it.

And I read his singling out as an act of hyperbole; he probably dislikes plenty of other '90s songs/bands, too, although only Radiohead is infectiously jimmy-rustling enough to warrant mention.

If I were forced to listen to only the biggest hits from each decade (in the genres I actually like), this, more or less, would be pretty solid. I'd probably move the '90s down one or two slots, *maybe* swap the '60s and '70s. We could insert a blank line or three between whatever's third and the '00s, and twice that amount of lines between the '00s and '80s.

The '00s are seriously dense with my less-mainstream favorites, though.

For if we start talking about the '60s.

You gotta show your work on this one. I can see maybe since we didn't live thruogh it, we've been able to by default sort out the junk, but there were so many classic albums, and it was just such an incredible period of innovation and experimentation.

Speaking of Tom Waits, my favorite album of his is Nitehawks at the Diner, but it seems like virtually everyone scrunches their nose up at that when I tell them after they bring up Tom Waits.

I don't mind that for radio, but this line of thinking is reminiscent of some of the electronic music where people charge 50+ for tickets and just press "play' on a macbook or something similar for their shows.

Well, I said imo for a reason -- basically, the 60s is great if you care about "innovation" etc, but I've never liked much of the actual music. The following decades become much more diverse, there's so many more quality bands, and as a result more music that I personally enjoy. And it's not like the 60s is the only decade with innovations either.

Yup, exactly. PREMISE is huge. Pretty sure it's impossible to make a song about partying like there's no tomorrow that I won't love.

Like I said, "great" goes over my head when it comes to music and I certainly wouldn't qualify sharp perception as a benefit.

Killers are good for like 1-2 good anthems per record, but only their debut was good. I don't dislike U2, but didn't go to them when they were here a couple years ago knowing it would likely be my only chance. meh. Coldplay, what can I say that wouldn't be a cliche? Muse were really good then went full ****** last 2 albums/5 years or so. They basically did a reverse Weezer where they've started taking themselves waaaay too seriously.

Also, new Strokes single any day now.

Below the surface, "Tik Tok" is a dense and allusive song, lyrically. (That sounds like a ridiculous claim, but I'm serious.) I think the superficial/simple vs. subtle/complex dichotomy is a rough approximation, inferior to the more correct one of generic vs. defamiliarizing. The most obvious example of the former's failing is in its inability to properly evaluate the best minimalist stuff.

For me it's just that so many of my favorite / most listened to albums are from the 60s. Revolver. Forever Changes. Astral Weeks. Let It Bleed. Blonde on Blonde. Highway 61 Revisited. Pet Sounds. and that's before we get into Hendrix, early Floyd / Zep / The Who, everything else the Beatles and Stones did, the Byrds, The Band, CCR, all the great soul singles, all the great garage rock and other psych-rock...

Rain Dogs is still my favorite, which I feel is kind of a lame answer, but then I don't care. Not sure you can really have a "wrong" favorite Tom Waits album.

Kesha's producer now originally went to Uffie to get her to come to America so he could make her into the next big pop thing and she turned him down, so he went to Kesha and ripped off everything Uffie did:

Yeah, that's fair. I've just personally never been a fan of most of that stuff, which I know makes me crazy or a zomg hipster or whatever...

The 60s does have the first Stooges album tho.
