Unless I'm missing something...?
I dunno.. if someone asked who my best friend was I wouldn't respond with my gf's name.

My wife and I dated for 10 years before we got married. Lived together for like 5+. We always knew we'd get married but we were basically just lazy about it and we knew we weren't planning on having kids for a while anyway. We were probably common law but I didn't want to look too closely into it.

There's no way I would marry anybody without living with them first. You really don't know your sig-other until you begin hanging out 24/7. It's quite an adjustment - some for better some for worse but it's totally different than not living together first.

You're supposed to tell your SO that they're your best friend, when in reality your best friends are your (duh) actual best friends and she's in (or he's in, whatever) an entirely different category.

I get what you're saying, but I just can't see a scenario where a couple in a healthy (adult) relationship would not be each others closests friends.

Chim replied as I expected; it's just odd to label your significant other as your best friend (especially on a sports forums around a bunch of dudes).

Been with the gf for 4 years now, lived together for the last 9 months or so. Would never consider her my best friend. My best friend is my best friend, my girlfriend is my girlfriend. They're mutually exclusive. But yes, females do seem to like their partner calling them their best friend, so if you have to say it just say it and move on. Just one of those things.

I feel fortunate reading this stuff that I feel she's my best friend. Are there things in life I'd rather do with one of my other friends than her? Sure, a couple, generally gambling related. But not many. The vast majority of activities that I would undertake where I'd want someone to come with me or participate with me in, she's without question my first choice.

Indeed. There is no one I would rather spend time with than my wife, but she's not my "best friend" because she's not my friend, she's my wife.

It's probably semantics, but to me, your wife can't be your best friend by definition - as Hoya said, she's in a different category.

If your wife died, I'm guessing you'd very quickly feel like you lost your best friend.

I've always thought that you were b/w 20-25, this changes everything.

I think you'd feel like you lost your best person, your most cherished relationship, the person you rely on most, etc.

but you'd be seeking solace from your best friend(s)

I dunno, I mean I get your point

i agree with everything clark is saying. doesn't hurt that i found a wife who likes gambling and sports, and doesn't want kids (in addition to the usual travel/food/wine thing).
