as far as I can tell that word is all but extinct in normal conversations and when used sometimes comes across as awkward in the sense that it sounds like the person saying it is trying to distance themselves.

This discussion is hitting way too close to home. Currently planning my wedding in Louisiana though both the wifey and I are from Michigan and moved down here 6 months ago. Inviting ~200+ people and realistically expecting less than 100, which we are perfectly fine with. I'm 24 she is 23.

I think we're going to need a definition of "best friend". Because in most cases, the person closest to you is also considered your best friend. And if you're in a relationship, you're most likely closest to your that person, thus making them your best friend.
