Well they actually are putting Floride in drinking water in between 60-80% of the US (slightly less in Canada). I just doesn't do what conspiracy nuts think it does, or much of anything actually.

The issue with the Prozac stuff is that the research stated anti-depressants can cause an increase in suicidal thoughts in people <25 years old. Well that's super but having a suicidal thought doesn't translate to actually killing yourself.

Additionally, the government isn't on some massive "Keep weed illegal" campaign to prop up drug companies. If they de-criminalized weed tomorrow, who do you think would stand to gain? My guess would be the guys with billion dollar labs and distribution networks. We'd have weed so strong it would melt your eyes.

Weed is illegal because the majority of people (70% I think) don't smoke it and a large number of those think it's evil. For the first time in modern US history we're right at 50-50 in favor of legalizing weed.

Weed's not illegal because of anything people think about it now. It's illegal because of propaganda campaigns around the turn of the last century, Hearst trying to scare everyone into thinking those dirty Mexicans would corrupt their white women with it, etc., and then the continued War on Drugs (gotta turn those inner cities into war zones imo).

If it were already legal, a campaign to ban it would have <1% chance of succeeding. I think most people don't give a **** about making it illegal.

To address this specifically, my wife (about 4 months away from a doctorate in clinical child neuropsych) gave me a great explanation for this. Essentially there is a level of depression so deep where you simply aren't capable of doing much of anything, much less planning out and committing suicide. As the prescribed anti-depressant starts to work, it makes the person better, but they have to pass through a 'red zone' where they are still depressed but capable of doing something. Eventually, they clear this zone as well.

This effect happens with more than just prozac, it's true of just about every single SSRI.
