I mean, is it really that much to ask to not get your facts straight? Or interview one of the numerous adults that happened to be in the school at the time?

Come on, phb. You are better than this. I have a hard time believing they need to interview a bunch of little kids who would give a terrible interview in a normal situation, because they are just little kids, to get information. There has to be someone of authority, teacher, administrator, etc. that could give a much better account of what happened.
This entire post makes me laugh.

Dude, they ran up to these kids and shoved a microphone in their face demanding to know what went on. That's scummy as ****.

I mean, I didn't see any of that from the news I was watching. Looked to me like they found some kids that weren't too shaken up from it (probably because 7 years olds might struggle to fully understand what happened, cause they're 7) and asked a few questions about what went on. Still, I'll bet the stuff we didn't see was super scummy.

Don't really care to discuss this much but that's a good example of what a bunch of ambulance-chasing bitches the media are. You know they get raging hard-ons about 09/11 and any other disaster they can sensationalize and milk to death for their own profit. Semi-locally the Tucson shooting from a couple of years ago was like that; their reporting of every stupid angle was well beyond my capacity for caring, and anyone else sane without a personal stake in the matter, but they put on their fake sad faces and pretend they GAF. Annoying.

People that play the "lets keep politics out of this" card when people bring up gun control after a mass shooting are the dumbest of people.

You are making a couple large assumptions here.

You have no idea if the kids interviewed today are worse off for doing so. You (and everyone else) is just making the claim with no science to back it up. I could just as easily say that talking about things like this and not suppressing them is better.

Should they really interview adults about the same event? Why? Isn't that also exploitation for ratings? Where do you decide to draw the cut-off between someone who is safe to interview and who is not? 18? 21? Some arbitrary number?

This happened to little kids, there is no hiding that.
the news in its current form is exploitative in general. i don't know exactly where to draw the line but i'm fine with saying that reporters who interview small children hours after they were involved in what will likely be the most tragic and shocking event of their lives and the producers who decide to air it are scummy people.

I was being pretty sarcastic.

The basic 24 hour media cycle and the people that feed it tend to be pretty scummy in general, but all the stuff I saw on this one seems mostly benign. Kids just gave a few statements about "loud bangs" they heard and the like. I didn't see any crying kids being badgered or anything, but in fairness I didn't watch a ton so I might've missed it if it happened.

Literally just heard this line as I got out of the car. Listening to talk radio (mistakes were made) and the first caller was "I can't believe people are talkin' gun control before the bodies are even cold. It's the time to grieve dammit"

Yeah, this puts me on monkeytilt every time. Especially since "let's not talk about that stuff!" is a view that (based on who it is that always says it) is very politically motivated.

Well thanks to the gun nuts we now have a massacre every other day so trumpeting the 'now is not the time' meme basically ensures the gun tards never have to answer for their disgraceful positions.

Real-time posting videos with commentary on posting strategy, sort of like poker strat videos or whatever, would be amusing.

The crazy people that wield the weapons probably deserve at least a part of the blame.

Good suggestions given. I'd def try and hit Angelo's for breakfast, Zingermans just to say you've been there and I personally try to hit Cottage Inn every time I'm in town.

the gist of the argument is

1. guns exist and there is no way to make them disappear
2. since they exist, if you really want to get one then you can regardless of the law
3. it is not good for law abiding people to never be able to defend themselves against criminals

I bet life in prison for being caught in possession of a gun would clean up the gun scene, even the underground criminal one, pretty quickly.

i would go so far as to say any gun crime + the sale of illegal guns should be a capital offense

It's not a good idea to make policy around what crazy ****s do.

(population could be reduced significantly if the war on drugs was ended)

It would also HUGELY ramp up the violence against police officers. When it's 25 with an izz-L for getting caught with a gun and you're riding dirty with a cop nearing your window, you're gonna blast first and run. Almost no downside given the potential punishment.
