I do like getting shot. If it's Marvin Harrison, that's an even bigger plus.

Philly gets a bad rep, it's not that bad. I lived there for like 9 months, but I wouldn't live there without living downtown.

I think Philly fits in around Columbus in the power rankings assuming you can afford Philly downtown housing. I give Philly a hard time as a place to live, but that's just cause I moved to Chicago which is way more awesome than Philly in pretty much every way.

And yeah, living downtown won't be a thing if we go to Philly b/c U Penn is the school. They pay dat private school money.

Yeah, Chicago is the best. U of Chicago is like the #1 school in her field too, but they are snooty as ****. They are the top of the pile and know it, so they treat everyone like ****, saying things like "This is the worst dissertation I have ever read" to interviewees. Basically you HAVE to apply there for political reasons so that they don't feel slighted. And then if they pick you, you HAVE to go b/c if you don't, good luck at ever getting published at any decent journal ever again.

It is, but I have to imagine the winters are a nightmare. Still, it's got a cool little downtown. For myself I would put it above Miami at the very least.

Kissinger once said that the politics of academia are so vicious because the stakes are so small, but man, that sounds even worse than I would have imagined.

I figured. Rice does have the bar with the cheapest beer on tap in the city right there on campus, if that's your thing. You can PM me if you have any more detailed questions about Houston / that neighborhood.

Weirdly, it kinda doesn't work like that. When schools make offers, they pretty much want to be sure the candidate is going to say yes, so what she has to do is assemble a list of the Top 5 or so schools that she would absolutely go to if offered, then make that public. She'll end up getting 8 or so interviews but probably only 1 or 2 offers based upon the little cat and mouse game that will be played through the process. Right now we are trying to make that Top 5 list.

sounds weird for me to say this, but given the list of places i think one of the midwest joints is your best bet. Seattle is nice and pretty so that's fine too but it's just kinda like... i dunno the whole pac nw is inhabited by wet noodles and I don't mean that like yeota would.

madison, urbana-champagne, ann arbor all seem pretty nice. columbus is pretty decent.

do not move to Ohio. I am speaking from no experience about most of these cities, but Ohio blows a lot. I didnt like Ann Arbor much when I went for a long weekend either, but it could have been worse.

Is there nothing in her field in the Research Triangle? It wouldn't be my first choice of places to live, but as far as having to be near a major university and excluding all the major cities that would be no brainers to move to it really is pretty solid: good weather, fairly cheap, enough to do, lots of people in their 20s and 30s, major airport nearby, centrally located on east coast, 2.5 hours to a beach or mountains, a NHL team, lots of college sporting events worth seeing.

I'm confused why Athens isn't at or near the top of that list. But maybe I'm partial to places where I wouldn't freeze my balls off half the year that aren't called Florida, cuz Florida sucks ass. Lots of pretty girls in Georgia too. Not so much in the Midwest.

Also, D104 I thought you were from Philly? Maybe I just assumed that cuz you're an Eagles fan.

Athens, GA
Columbus, OH
Seattle, WA
Madison, WI
Iowa City, Iowa
Urbana-Champaign, IL
Ann Arbor, MI
Gainesville, FL
Houston, TX
East Lansing, MI

Aside from Gainesville, FL, if you have ever lived in or spent significant time in one of those cities, some information would be awesome. Please tell me why it is awesome or sucks to live in one of those cities. Information about restaurants and food is especially appreciated, but any info is great.

Thanks!
Athens is the best of these options until you turn 23 or so, then it quickly probably becomes the worst.

How willing to commute is your wife? If she is willing to do a 1 hr commute each way Athens is probably at or near the top of the list bc you could work your way towards Atlanta. If not then it would kinda blow.

In my experience, there are probably better cities than Ann Arbor to be 25 and single.

If you're in your late 20s-early 30s and want to raise a family, but don't have to be in a big city, I really can't think of a place I would rather go than Ann Arbor.

Iowa and Florida have been gagged and tossed in a river somewhere.
