skeeps is like the worst bar in AA. The draft beer smells like ass but still smells better than the bar. Good for drinking underage though!

Madison is nice too.. I'd definitely prefer living there over Columbus, allegiances aside

Athens, GA
Columbus, OH
Seattle, WA
Madison, WI
Iowa City, Iowa
Urbana-Champaign, IL
Ann Arbor, MI
Gainesville, FL
Houston, TX
East Lansing, MI

Aside from Gainesville, FL, if you have ever lived in or spent significant time in one of those cities, some information would be awesome. Please tell me why it is awesome or sucks to live in one of those cities. Information about restaurants and food is especially appreciated, but any info is great.

Thanks!
Houston:

Awesome: Very low cost of living (especially housing, if you're willing to commute a little); a selection of restaurants whose quality and variety of cuisine are among the best in the world; diversity, if that's your thing; art galleries

Sucks: Air quality, traffic, lack of useful mass transit, no bands worth seeing ever come here, general lack of nature

oh yeah after living in the Midwest (Central Indiana and Ann Arbor area) my whole life and recently moving to the gulf, the south is the way to go. Michigan winters are pretty bad if you're not into hunting or cold weather outdoor activities. Michigan summers are the best though. But for someone who doesn't mind heat or humidity and has no problem playing 18 holes in 95* weather, I'll take the south and no winter.

Isn't Houston consistently the fattest city in the US? Not that there's anything wrong with that (there is).

Yeah, I would steer clear of Walmarts in Houston. Believe they have a restaurant for every two people.

Yes, which is a combination of all the great restaurants and the lack of outdoor things to do and the infeasibility of any form of transportation that isn't a car. Oh, and that most of the jobs are sitting in an office servicing the energy industry somehow.

This basically sounds like Phoenix, where I lived for 7 years. I don't have a desire to go back, the sprawl just got to me after a while.

Not really. No schools of interest were hiring in her field this year. NYU is looking for someone, but there's this weird political thing between NYU and her school that I won't bore you with.

Not for the first few years. Most schools demand the new professors to teach summers, Rice is no exception.

Rice is in a nice part of town, if you had to live in Houston. It's near all the museums/parks and just a few minutes from midtown and downtown (though it's nestled in an old upscale residential neighborhood). And Rice village is kind of a walkable mixed-use community.

I still nub you Tuq. I liked a lot about Phoenix, but the sheer amount of driving, especially the work commute, just got to me after a while. At one point, my wife and I were commuting 20+ hours/week. That's a too much!
