Dibs can convert tiresome contests of physical speed and/or parking one's ass in a single location into those of verbal speed. All reasonable parties involved will likely have an interest in avoiding unnecessary footraces or ass-parking, so yeah, dibs seems like a good idea.

In this case, yes. If you call dibs and catch a flight overseas, on the other hand, the other person should probably get your spot.
Also, I subscribe to the one-attempt model of dibs. If you call dibs on a seat, for instance, and fall down in a graceless heap while attempting to sit, it's no longer yours.
